The information I have garnered about Charles "Pretty Boy" Floyd's bank robberies has come from Michael Wallis's The Life and Times of Charles Arthur Floyd, Jeffrey S. King's The Life and Death of Pretty Boy Floyd , and a few web resources. Please note that this is not currently a comprehensive listing of all of Pretty Boy Floyd's bank robberies. 1925


Tower Grove Bank, St. Louis, MO -- 11 September 1925

Accomplices: Fred Hildebrand and Joseph Hlavaty

Amount Taken: $11929, payroll that was bound for Kroger Grocery & Baking Company

Police Notes

  • This was most likely Floyd's biggest robbery.
  • He was arrested two days later with Fred Hildebrand back home in Sallisaw, OK because of a recently acquired brand new car.
  • He was shipped back to St. Louis on 16 September 1925
  • On 8 December 1925, he was sentenced to 5 years at the state penitentiary in Jefferson City, MO after pleading guilty to highway robbery.

1930


Farmers & Merchants Bank, Sylvania, OH -- 5 February 1930

Accomplices
  • James Bradley (aka Bert Walker) Bob Amos, Jack Atkins, and one unknown. (MW)

  • James Bradley, Nathan King (JK)
Amount Taken: Less than $2000

Police Notes

  • He was arrested 3 days later as material witness for the unrelated shooting and eventual murder of policeman Harold F. Manes by James Bradley and later connected to the bank robbery.
  • He was booked as Frank Mitchell, alias "Pretty Boy" Smith (#19983).
  • On 24 November 1930, he was sentenced to 12 - 14 years at state prison in Columbus, OH.
  • While en route to the prison, he escaped by breaking his handcuffs and jumping out the window of the moving train.

1931

Accomplices: Willis Miller (aka Billy the Killer) and George Birdwell

  • No further information on this robbery.

Mount Zion Deposit Bank, Elliston, KY -- April 1931

Accomplices: Willis Miller (aka Billy the Killer)

Amount Taken: $2000, $250 in gold

Police Notes

  • Kentucky authorities believed Pretty Boy Floyd and Willis Miller robbed this bank while traveling with Beulah (Juanita) and Rose Baird.

  • This is the second time that this bank was hit.

First National Bank of Konawa, Konawa, OK -- 5 November 1931

Accomplices: George Birdwell and an unknown robber.

Amount Taken: $2500

Morris State Bank, Morris, OK -- 23 December 1931

Accomplices: George Birdwell and perhaps an unknown driver.

  • Pretty Boy Floyd and co. are the most likely suspects of this robbery.

First State Bank, Stonewall, OK -- 21 April 1932

Accomplices: George Birdwell and perhaps an unknown driver.

Amount Taken: $800

  • No further information on this robbery.

Sallisaw State Bank, Sallisaw, OK -- 1 November 1932

Accomplices: George Birdwell and Aussie Elliot.

Amount Taken: $2531.73

Police Notes

  • After the robbery, stories tell of Floyd driving up & down the street throwing coins on the road.

1933

Perpetrators: Adam Richetti, Aussie Elliot, Edgar Dunbar, and John L. Moore

Amount Taken: $3000

Police Notes

  • Floyd did not actually participate in this robbery.
  • Floyd supposedly had changed tactics at this time by not participating in some bank robberies, but planning them.
  • Please note that John L. Moore was supposedly working as an informer for police during his time with the bank robbers.

unknown bank, Comanche, OK -- 26 April 1933

Perpetrators: Coleman Rickerson, Clarence Garatley, Shine Rush

Amount Taken: $2000

Police Notes

  • It is possible that Floyd may have helped plan this robbery, but there is no documentation to back this up.
  • After an initial getaway, Garatley was arrested three days later and Rickerson was killed.
