Why is a Wolfdog Not a Dog?
A wolf is at least 10 times more intelligent than the average dog, making wolf dogs generally more intelligent depending on the cross. They are independent and stubborn; many people have compared their behavior to that of a teenager. Because wolf dogs are more intelligent they do not feel obligated to follow commands and are not as dependent on humans. They usually relate to their owner as a friend rather than their master.
Wolf dogs are very shy, a trait passed on from wolves after years of persecution by man. Many wolf dogs are very skittish and afraid of strangers which makes it hard for them to fit in the normal 'pet' situation.
Wolf dogs are very social and need constant companionship. They should never be left alone as they become very destructive and will try to escape any confinement to seek companionship.
A wolf dog's coat is designed for living outside in all weather. It is waterproof and will protect them down to 60 degrees below zero. Their coat will change with the season and when they are kept inside they usually shed constantly as their body tries to figure out what the season is.
Having a wolf dog in your life is a major responsibility, similar to having a child. They are not for everyone and those who think they want to have a wolf dog as a friend (not pet!) should educate themselves on wolves, wolf dogs and how to live with them.
