My car is an 86 subaru station wagon . It has a 1800 cc engin and is a dule range 4 wheel drive . Subarus are not the best 4 weel drives in the world . They are pretty good over sand because they are so light . But ground clearence is a bit of a problem . Subarus can not clear the ruts in the sand that biger 4 wheel drives create.
Niether do subaru's have limeted slip differentials . Limeted slip differential's are a great asset when driving over soft sand , because with out limitid slip diffs if one wheel slips it takes the power from the other wheels and digs into the sand.
The subaru is very reliable. I have taken it from Carnarvan in WA to Harvey Bay in Queensland with out a problem.
It is not the most economical of cars and chews up quite a bit of juice when accelerating hard.
Subaru's like most 4 wheel drives have C.V.'s ( constant velocity joints ) and there only protected by a thin rubber boot. (thin rubber sheath). This ruber boot can quite simply be ripped open when 4 wheel driving by sticks and rubbish. When the rubber boot is ripped open, sand and grit can get in to the C.v.s joint and the sand and grease make a grit that grinds the hardend surface of the C.V joint, wearing it away and making it useless.
