BIO SKETCH OF KENT J. SMITH, JR., Ph.D.

Dr. Kent J. Smith, Jr. currently serves as the Director of the Office of Multicultural Affairs at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio and he is also on the Faculty in the Psychology Department at Cleveland State University. He is also a Organizational Development and Diversity Consultant with D. L. Plummer and Associates. His current duties are, but not limited to, the administrative operation of multicultural activities and the development of programs that improve the overall success and graduation of undergraduate underrepresented students at Case Western Reserve University. Previously, Dr. Smith served as the Assistant Director of Black Student Services at Colorado State University, and as adjunct faculty in the Center for the Applied Study of American Ethnicity, also at Colorado State University.

Prior to joining the staff at Colorado State University, Dr. Smith served his alma mater, Southern University, located in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, as the undergraduate Student Government Association President, and as a member of the Board of Supervisors. After graduating, Dr. Smith also served Southern University as an Assistant Director in the Upward Bound Program. The Louisiana native's professional career has been dedicated to providing educational opportunities to non-traditional and minority students. He has a myriad of experiences ranging from owning his own business to being a certified budgeting and credit counselor. These experiences, coupled with his dedication to higher education for minority students have afforded him the opportunity to assist hundreds of students to realize their educational goals that may have otherwise been unattained. Additionally, he has expertise in counseling, interpersonal relations, leadership training, research, budget development, program review, program evaluation and administration.

Dr. Smith received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Secondary Education in May 1992 and his Master of Education degree in Educational Administration and Supervision from Southern University in May 1997. The Doctor of Philosophy degree was conferred from Colorado State University (Fort Collins, Colorado) in May 2000 in Education and Human Resource Studies, with a concentration in Educational Administration and Student Affairs.

Dr. Smith has achieved several honors and awards including: Outstanding Young Men of America, Who's Who in American Colleges and Universities. He was also a Graduate Fellowship Recipient at Colorado State University.

His professional, social, and religious affiliations include membership in the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators, the American College Personnel Association, Kappa Delta Pi Educational Fraternity, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Incorporated (Member), Southern University National Alumni Association, the Global Issues Resource Center (Trustee), Cleveland School of the Arts (Trustee), St. Thomas Aquinas School (Board Member), and St. Agnes-Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church (Member, Advisory Board Member).
