Weiss-Blau Bayern Junior Schuhplattler

About us

Weiss-Blau Bayern Juniors, formed in September 1991, is a group of children and teenagers who performs folk dances and Schuhplattler native to Bavaria and Tyrol.
The Schuhplattler, loosely translated “shoe slapping”, is a traditional dance in which men or boys doing a series of slapping motion between hands, feet and leather shorts in time with the music, while the ladies or girls spin on the spot or spin while moving with the circle showing off their traditional dress. Some of these dances may tell a story from everyday life such as a wood cutting, while others may be courting dances.
Weiss-Blau Bayern Juniors also play Cow Bells, an art form in itself. Cow Bells are part of the traditional musical culture, they are real cow bells like you may see on cows in Europe, but are in many sizes, each with its own unique voice.

Weiss-Blau Bayern Juniors perform actively in multicultural festivals and events. Since 1992 the group has performed at Carabram, Brampton’s annual multicultural festival, at the CNE International Stage, Oshawa’s multicultural festival, the Fenelon Falls Canada Day Celebrations, St. Lawrence Market Roots of Toronto Festival, Children’s International Days, numerous Oktoberfests, Heimat Abends and Trachtenfests. They also perform at Senior Citizen Community Centres and Nursing Homes, primarily during the Holiday Season and the Oktoberfest season. They have even performed at weddings!!! In August 2003 the group participated in a Trachtenfest in Bavaria, Germany. Weiss-Blau Bayern Juniors are proud host of annual “Kinderfest”, children festival that celebrates colourful dances and music of the many children dance groups that are keeping alive their tradition of folkdance in the community.

Weiss-Blau Bayern Juniors are a sub-group of the Schuhplattler Trachten Verein Weiss-Blau Bayern, and member of German Canadian Club Hansa in Brampton, Ontario and Gauverband Nordamerika.
