Sown in a green and shady bed
A modest violet grew
Stalk bent, it hung its head
As if to hide from view
And yet it was a lovely flower
Colours bright and fair
It may have graced a lady's bower
Instead of fading there
Rising atop, content to bloom
In modest hues arrayed
And there diffused a sweet perfume
Within the silent shade
