  Did You Know ?                                            

 

Dr. Horace Wells, a dentist, found that Nitrous Oxide (Laughing gas), which was used back then for fun at parties, had anesthetic properties. He felt a real need to help relieve the discomfort patients felt in an age when there was no anesthesia. On December 10, 1844, he first had it administered on himself as another dentist removed a bad tooth with good results.

After several favorable experiments, a former business partner and student, Dr. William Morton, encouraged him to set up a public demonstration. Dr. Wells extracted a tooth on a patient in front of prominent physicians and students. It went pretty well, but the patient moaned a little after the tooth was already out and all the physicians in the room discounted the demonstration and ridiculed Dr. Wells even though the patient reported reduced levels of pain. 

Dr. Morton later on administered Ether for the first time in the same Massachusetts General Hospital amphitheater that Dr. Wells used for his demonstration. Unfortunately, Dr. Wells later on became addicted to Chloroform was sent to prison and used chloroform to block the pain of a self inflicted fatal injury.

Dear Members we are at the fag end of another IDA year. The new team will take charge under the leadership of Dr.Tijo Alex soon. We understand that a lot of talented people out there who can make our association to reach to more higher levels. We need more and more members to actively join in the administration of IDA Alappuzha to make the programs more colorful, more useful and  more enjoyable .

Hello Friends, For the first time in the history of IDA Alappuzha some of our members are standing for the forth coming elections In the  IDA Kerala State. So it is our pride and prestige to give  all the  help and support to our representatives for securing their positions in the respective  posts. Let our voices be heard in the State IDA  Meetings.

IDA Alappuzha Leads the Way.

Since it’s inception in the year 2000 IDA Alappuzha has grown it’s stature in all aspects. Thanks to all the members who have actively participated in all the activities so far.IDA Alappuzha is unique for it’s harmonious relation between the members and the quality     programs we have produced.

The recent decision by the dental council of India to  abolish the compulsory internship for BDS Students was surprised everybody who loves to see the high standard in the BDS Course at par with any other similar courses where maximum knowledge and exposure to training is a must as the freshly passed out graduates have no restriction in independently dealing with live human beings as their patients.

IDA Alappuzha Appreciate the efforts by the dental council to improve the quality of dentistry by increasing the curriculum extending to 5 years  but at the same time expressing concern about  abolishing compulsory internship from the curriculum.

 

In Fact IDA Alappuzha  is the first IDA branch in India to raise the concern about this and properly raised the matter in the state forum.IDA Kerala State has understood the seriousness of the matter and taken up the issue. Subsequently the matter was discussed in the government level .Also the Gov. of Kerala has issued a circular  to Universities Coming Under it for reinstating the Internship for BDS..Dental fraternity in Tamilnadu and Andhrapradesh also expressed similar concerns Like ours. We shall hope that all the concerned people will reach a decision which will uphold The quality of dentistry in our country and pride of the Profession

         We are extremely happy that IDA Alappuzha  executive committee has started the move in IDA Level in India. We are also thankful for  Dr.Krishnakumar for bringing the matter to our notice and Dr.Venugopal g for presenting the matter in a proper manner.
