Mary & Henry Fougère's Family

There are a number of Fougère families in River Bourgeois and all are related in some way.

My direct connection is with my father Amable's family. Mary & Henry Fougère were my father's parents.  Of their children just one survives and she continues to thrive -- Aunt Evelyn - Evelyn (Fougère) Burke, wife of Victor -- Former Post Mistress & Post Master of South Side River Bourgeois.

Evelyn and Victor are still alive and well as we enter 2008 but they are now well cared for in a Nova Scotia nursing home ... still enjoying their family and friends and weekly church attendance, reading, contacts with friends 'from the River' and more.

Aunt Evelyn has one request of anyone with 'old' photos.  She would really enjoy having a picture of her Grandmother Catherine.  Catherine was Catherine Samson Fougère, wife of Anselme.  Catherine's parents were Catherine Langley & Charles Samson.  If anyone has a photo of her ... we would enjoy hearing from you!  A scan of such a photo would be wonderful.

Note: Simon Fougère (married to Marguerite Samson) was born in Arichat but he died in River Bourgeois. All others in the line after him, to my father inclusive, were also born in River Bourgeois.

Another 'tidbit' of information:

Note that Catherine Samson married Anselme.

Catherine Samson's mother was Catherine Langley, daughter of Charlotte Beaver and Duncan Langley. Charlotte's mother was Anna Maria Julianna Kuhn, daughter of Rudolph Kuhn and Katerina Hagens, German immigrants.

Anna Maria's aunt ... Susanna ... sister of her father Rudolph, married Peter McNab of McNab's Island. Susanna and Peter's grandchild Catherine married Joseph Howe.

Premier Joseph Howe served his apprenticeship in the printing shop that the senior Howe had established in 1781. They published a newspaper, the Halifax Journal.

Premier Joseph Howe married Catherine Ann Susan McNab (Anna Maria's first cousin once removed) on February 2, 1828.

Following is an interesting link where you will discover a letter Premier Joseph Howe wrote to his wife 'Susan Ann' McNab Howe:

HENRY'S CONNECTION TO SR. ANNE SAMSON ~ SEVENTH OLDEST PERSON IN THE WORLD AT THE TIME OF HER DEATH IN NOVEMBER OF 2004:

Now ... I would like to tell you how Henry Fougère was a second cousin of Sr. Anne Samson ~ Les Filles de Jesus ~ Moncton, New Brunswick, originally of River Bourgeois

Jean Baptiste Samson m. Marguerite Francoise Clerge:

Jean Samson m. Marguerite Landry

Among their children were Charles & Abraham Samson

Charles Samson m. Catherine Langley and his brother Abraham m. Sophie Landry

Charles' son daughter was Catherine Samson who married Anselme Fougere

Abraham's son was Thomas Samson who married Philomene Burke

Catherine's son Henry Fougere (my grandfather) was therefore a second cousin of Thomas's daughter Anne Samson - Sr. Anne

Amable (my father) would be Sr. Anne's 2nd cousin once removed

Helena (me) would be Sr. Anne's 2nd cousin twice removed

There you have it! It's a delight to have a person in the family who was declared the seventh oldest person in the world as of November 2004!

(I could re-work this and have us connected another way because there are actually more family connections to be made that would make us related to Sr. Anne ... but this one will do!)

River Bourgeois' Garvie Samson celebrated Sr. Anne's life with the publication of several books of poetry. Garvie, author of The River that Isn't.

For information on  the Fougère family, we have excellent sources!

Charlene MacKenzie has compiled a very informative and interesting document regarding the progenitor of our Fougères - Jean Fougère.   Charlene and Henry, for whom this site is named, are both descendants of Jean's son Charles.

Charlene Fraser's Fougere Information

The ancestor of all Fougeres in Richmond County was Jean Fougere. He had two wives and the first was Marie Bourg from whom Henry is descended. Many others in Richmond County are descendants of Jean Fougere and his second wife Marie-Madeleine Belliveau. Following, we have the marriage document for Marie and Jean:

A Celebration of Fougères!

An amazing reunion was held July 31/August 1, 2004

D'Escousse was the place for descendants of Jean Fougère.  This gathering was for Fougères of all ages -- spouses and extended family groups.   We discovered our roots.   Genealogist Stephen White, was there to tell us about Jean Fougère 's arrival in Cape Breton.

Several hundred arrived for the celebration, one led by Annette and Allan Fougère of D'Escousse who did a remarkable job of it all!

I scanned this beautiful image of Evangeline. It was on a very old postcard entitled: Faed's "Evangeline" Grand Pré, Nova Scotia, Canada - G.17.
