When
we Discover the Light…there are New Beginnings!
Epiphany…this
season of the Christian year…is all about discovering the Light….for this
season is all about the light of Christ.
Jesus shines light on a world in need.
Jesus shines light on what God is like.
In the life, teachings, healings, conversations, and everyday stuff of Jesus’
living we discover the Light! Jesus
shows us the way to God. He shines a
light so that we might see clearly the way God hopes we live each day. Jesus shines a light which reveals places of
need in our world…and this light reveals where are our ministries.
When
we learn of Jesus in this season…it is like holding on to a flash light…
in
a dark place. To discover a way…we must
shine the light…we must use the flash light.
To discover anything new in this place…or to keep ourselves from
stepping in a hole…we must use the flash light. For us…the Bible is the flash light of faith. It shines in the darkness …pointing the way…
keeping us safe…and allowing us to discover new things. In the dark… to discover the way…be safe…or
discover new things…we must use the flash light. In life… to discover a way…live in the Kingdom…or come to new
understandings of God and life…we must use the Bible. It has to be in our hand…read by our eyes…thought through with
our brains…and grasped with our hearts. Discovering a way…in this life… is more
likely when we put the light of Christ…the Bible to use.
When
we put the light of Christ to use… we discover a way of life to which God calls
each of us. We discover that each of us
is always welcomed home by God…we are part of the family! We “see” where God is calling us to
serve. In the serving we discover new
insight into God and God’s Will, love, grace…. which always leads us to new
beginnings…
This
Epiphany….as we discover the light and so faithfully serve….we will be healing,
teaching and encouraging …which is the life style of all disciples, ministers,
stewards, missionaries, saints, and all people who follow Jesus. This Epiphany
the Hurlbut Family will once again take seriously our mission to share Christ
with the community and the world…by giving of our prayers, presence, gifts and
service. This Epiphany let us use the
flash light of faith..
so
that we might see the way…live in the Kingdom/community…and discover new
understandings of God which lead us to faithful living.
May it be so!

Invitation to Old Testament Disciple Bible Study Sometimes the most difficult part of being a Christian is inviting someone else to meet Jesus. Sometimes we have questions about life and faith. Sometimes….. well… Disciple Invitation to the Old Testament is an opportunity to explore the meaning of life. D Invite to OT
Is an opportunity to learn more about the Bible Jesus quoted from and the Scriptures which
influenced him.
D invite to OT will begin on Monday, January 23rd at 7p.m and Tuesday January 24 at 10 am. D invite to OT is an 8 week experience which does require about 30 minutes daily in reading and preparation.
We invite you to invite others!
Discover
the Light , and get yourself to Hurlbut Church-Family Camp at Camp Findley! The dates are Friday and Saturday, February 3-4. The cost is $50/person
or $120/family for staying
overnite or $30/person or $90/family for Saturday only. Meals and snacks are included. Please respond to the Church Office by
January 22nd. Scholarships are

first study sessions on Friday evening….you don't have to stay overnight… but
we really encourage everyone to attend the first study sessions on Friday… Come
for dinner and the study! Then stay or
go home and come back in the morning.
This year the Youth Groups and Adults will
concentrate on discovering the light, and look into how to use the Bible as a
resource. Children will be lead
separately during small group opportunities.
Family Camp is for everyone in the ENTIRE Hurlbut Family. We operate in teams called Family Groups …
not your immediate family … but a family lead by a Family Group Leader. Family Group Leaders are being coordinated
now and we'll be announced in Church very soon. Family Group Leaders will be recruiting team members from
different age groups in the congregation.
Don't hesitate to let them know you'll
be there.
In these Family Groups we encourage one another's
Spirit in friendly competition. It's a grand time for fellowship, singing,
Bible Trivia, friendship and inspiration.
Invite a friend along.....please call the office for information. Scholarships are available! “It Really is the place you want to be!”
Discovering the Light “…if we walk in the light, as He is in the light, we
have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, God’s Son,
purifies us from all sin. 1John

NEWS CONTINUED
New News about Mid-term Delights for our College Students We're trying
out a new idea this year for the annual College Goodie Boxes. We are going to coordinate the effort so
that members of the Hurlbut Family may "adopt" a college student in
order to prepare a goodie box for them.
No commitment of room and board beyond that is required! We'll coordinate and send boxes in early
March. Cash donations are also welcome
and the Nurture Committee will shop if necessary. Empty boxes for use will be
available after worship during several weeks in February. Suggested items are: postage stamps, toothbrushes, school
supplies, coupons for laundry
essentials, candy, cards, phone cards, toothpaste, pens, pencils, gum.
lifesavers, stationary, granola bars, wash cloths, home made cookies!!!, devotional
magazines, batteries, a note offering love and support for our students away
from home.
Information
Please Please let the church office
know the correct addresses for college students in your family. Each year we work to make sure that each box
is shipped efficiently. Having the correct
address early is a big help!
Hurlbut’s
Gulf Coast Project On
February 18 – 25 some of the Hurlbut Family is going to work in the hurricane
relief zone along the Gulf Coast. Sandy
and David Brown are heading up the team from Hurlbut which will make the
journey to bring aid and comfort to those still grieving great loss and
calamity. We will be driving down in
our own vehicles bringing our tools and equipment with us. The cost for this mission experience is
approximately $500. Everyone is
welcomed and invited to join our Volunteers in Mission! Please contact Sandy and David for more
details.
Project
Chacocente….. Nicaragua Some members of the Hurlbut
Family will be traveling to work with the people of Project Chacocente in
Nicaragua on February 18-25. Project
Chacocente is a ministry started by the Mission of Peace which has moved 10
families out of the dump in Managua to a plot of land where they are being
taught to farm…do crafts for sale in the market…and life skills to enable them
to make a go of it outside the dump.
The project is named after a beach in Nicaragua which has been set aside
as a protected place for Sea Turtles to lay their eggs. Our own Hurlbut
Turtles are: Bev and Sam Hazen, Kathy and Jim Goetz and Mary and Ted.
Each and all of us can offer our support to these
projects through our own time, talents and gifts. Money is needed to support the purchase of supplies for the
projects our ministers/missionaries will undertake. Prayer is needed to lift up those ministers and their families and
those they have yet to meet. Supplies are needed to take along for assorted
projects. Please prayerfully consider
your response. Be in touch with the
church office as you are lead to respond.
Food
Basket Ministry - Open 24 hours. We are
cordially invited to support the Food Basket Ministry to the Ashville United
Methodist Church Food Shelf. The
holidays (holy days) are past ....and people are still hungry! Please bring a cash donation or
non-perishable food to the food basket at the Scott Street entrance.
WORSHIP NOTES
The Chautauqua Reunion Choir will share worship with us
on January 22. As always, this will be
a special musical Sunday. Please invite
someone to experience Hurlbut worship
with the Reunion Choir!
Disciplines for 2006
This daily devotional which follows the
lectionary scriptures, is once again available for our devotional life. It is our prayerful intent that meditating
upon these scriptures together throughout the year will help us to grow as a
congregation. We believe that
participating in these devotionals during the week helps open the meaning of
the Sunday scriptures for our lives.
Disciplines are available in the church office and during fellowship
time after worship for $10.00.
STAFF PARISH NOTES
This
month Ted will be in China on the Mission of Peace until January 14th.
Please call the church office for Pastoral assistance. Ted is currently Chairing the Boundaries
Task Force of our Western NY Conference.

FINANCE COMMITTEE Stewardship
The Law of Zealous Readiness - "Zealous
Stewardship spreads like a powerful contagion"
Paul in 2Corthinians 9 states: "There is no
need for me to write to you about this service to the saints for I know your
eagerness to help, and I have been boasting about it to the Macedonians,
telling them that since last year you in Achaia were ready to give; and your
enthusiasm has stirred most of them to Action." Godly zeal is a powerful force, which has a contagious effect on
other believers. When the Corinthian
Christians gave eagerly and enthusiastically, it motivated the Macedonians to
do likewise.
To be zealously ready as a servant and steward is to
live with a heightened sense of responsiveness to God's leading. It is not to be fanatical but to be a true
Christian. True Christianity belongs
neither to the left nor to the right in the political realm. True Christianity is neither conservative nor
liberal in the social realm. True
Christianity is not of this earth but
of heaven.
Sometimes Christians become fanatical, going off on
tangents or giving their time and energies to causes rather than to Christ. Such fanatical behavior is usually prompted
either by a misunderstanding of God's Word, misapplication of God's truth, or
sin that has crated the need for a spiritual smokescreen. Today's fanatics are often motivated by
anger, guilt
or fear, while the believer is compelled by love.
In the context of biblical stewardship, zealousness
is a Christ-centered passion to give everything for His sake. It is all-encompassing, enfolding all that
one is capable of giving: money, time, influence, help, counsel or a
thousand-and-one other things.
Based on the book, "The 33 Laws of
Stewardship," by Dave Sutherland and Kirk Nowery, Spire Recourses Inc,
2003.

Thanks! Dennie!
For
several years Dennie Stahlsmith has worked tirelessly to bring us a great
looking and good news filled Visitor. She has had to remind us…and remind us again…and
then often write the articles herself…in order to get out the news.
Now Dennie is taking on another
ministry for the Hurlbut Family. She is
working with Jane Akin and Anne Marshaus on the Faith Weaver Circle of Friends
every Wednesday evening…in addition to teaching Church School. Thank You Dennie! For your outstanding ministry/service/gift of editing the Visitor!

Many thought this was a “New” hymn when Cliff Barrows first sang it at a crusade in Canada in 1955. It was first written in Sweden in 1885 of 1886. The original title was “A Great God”, then changed again in 1925 to “O Mighty God”.
It was sung many years in Russia when it was brought to the attention of English missionaries Mr. & Mrs. Stuart Hine. It was then widely used by them in western Ukraine. After World War II the 4th stanza was added in 1948. It will only be when we reach our heavenly home that we will fully comprehend the greatness of God. On that day we shall “bow in humble adoration” and say “my God, how great thou art.”

Because we ought to give joyfully....
My name is Pride, I
am a cheater.
I cheat you of your God-given destiny…because you demand your own way,
I cheat you of contentment…because you ”deserve better than this,”
I cheat you of knowledge .. because you already know it all,
I cheat you of healing …because you’re too full of me to forgive,
I cheat you of holiness…because you refuse to admit when you’re wrong.
I cheat you of vision…because you’d rather look in the mirror than out
a window.
I cheat you of genuine friendship…because nobody’s going to know the
real you.
I cheat you of love…because real romance demands sacrifice.
I cheat you of greatness in heaven…because you refuse to wash another’s
feet on earth.
I cheat you of God’s glory…because I convince you to seek your own.
My name is pride. I am a
cheater. You like me because you think
I’m always looking out for you. Untrue.
I’m looking to make a fool of you. God
has so much for you, I admit, but don’t worry…
If you stick with me you’ll never know.
We Communicate!
Share Christ! Share the Light! Share Hurlbut!
The goal of the Communication Committee is to Share Christ, Share Hurlbut.
Committee members agree with studies that show that the personal invitation to come to church is the most effective! We are encouraged when we see people assuming the responsibility for extending invitations.
Keep up the good work - guests are responding!
We will keep offering tools and encouragement for people to invite, in addition to providing warm and welcoming general publicity, articles and advertising, and responding to the communications needs of the church.
We
have communicated with visitors with a friendly postcard following their visit.
We have communicated with visitors, friends, donors and shut-ins this Christmas
by sending a darling Christmas card designed by Matthew Anderson. The church
received many compliments on its Christmas card in past years.
In the 12/14/1999 commentary entitled “Looking for Love in All the Wrong Places, Charles Colson states:
For more than a century, scholars have been on a quest to find an elusive figure they call the "historical Jesus." Yet, as we approach the start of the third millennium, they are no closer to finding him than when they started.
That's because they are looking in the wrong places.
The .... upcoming millennium, has renewed interest in knowing who Jesus was. When your neighbors ask, offer to take them to the place he said he would be waiting for them: your church. Copyright (c) 1999 Prison Fellowship Ministries

twas two weeks before
Christmas and all through our lives
there was tension and stress...some
even got hives
the stockings still packed
away with past care
it seemed that St. Nicholas
would not soon be there
the children were stressed
....difficult to sleep in their beds
while pressures of
school/parents/society/sports/responsibilities/success danced in their heads
and all of us seemed to have our strength sapped
we all needed to stop! and just take a nap
and all of our lives were
filled with such clatter
there was no doubt that
something was the matter
so we ran around hectic...threw
nice things out with trash
bought so little (really) at
the store....but soon ran out of cash
when what to our confused
minds should appear
some folks looking for
room.....we have no room this year
with our God made so little
we had to be slick
to sing Silent Night...get
it over with quick
more rapid than eagles the
stress how it came
and we whistled and shouted
and called it by name
there’s greed and
selfishness, falsehood and pride
too much to do (or
priorities askew) peace of mind doesn’t abide
so much to take on too little saying no
we want to do it all but our life doesn’t flow
as dry leaves before the
hurricane fly
when they meet with an
obstacle mount to the sky
so too we are at the extent
of our doing
and we’d better stop soon or
our life we’ll be rue-ing
putting God really
first...saying no to all others
doing less for ourselves
...more for sisters and brothers...
stress is a mixture of so
many things
with God really first then we all could sing
Love! Peace! Hope! and Joy!

Merry Christmas to all and
to all God’s good life!
The Church is supposed to be for us a joyfilled opportunity and experience.
It is supposed to be the fellowship in which we are given Good News to take with us into our daily lives. We are not to be so caught up in being the church that we have no time left to be the Body of Christ...the Light of the World in the world. It is not in the church where our ministry exists...but in the world of our daily lives.
The right people in the right places .....for the right reasons. Ever wonder about what gifts God has given you? Ever wonder how to apply those gifts in life? Every wonder what or how God would like you to live? How about your passion? How about your personal style? In five weeks we will discover the answers to these questions in an exciting study called Network! Network will occur on Thursday evenings.....please sign up on the Small Group Bulletin Board. beginning January 15.

R.S.V.P. in person regularly on Sundays
Thanks to all who have
signed up to serve as ushers, liturgists, communion stewards, floral providers
and fellowship hosts! These ministries
enable and support our gathering for worship as Christ’s Body. Advanced commitment assists in planning and
preparing for each Sunday. There are
still some opportunities for service ... please sign up on the sign up sheets
in Truesdale Hall. Reminder notes and
instructions are sent each week.
One of the areas of ministry
or of servant-like awareness and concern for others, which is more needed in
these next few months, is the ministry of Parking on Sundays. Here is how it works....
1. Those
who are able are encouraged to park behind Norton Hall and walk.
2. Those
who are not feeling up to walking from a parking place that may be too
far...please call the church office in advance and
we will arrange for someone to meet you at the Scott Street Entrance...and
park your car for you. Your keys are
returned before worship and
the
Parker will meet you after worship to bring your car back.
3. Those
interested in this Ministry please contact the office or speak to Marcie Larson
or Ted.
The first Methodist Class at Chautauqua was organized in 1878 by Rev. Rufus Pratt just 4 years after the founding of the Chautauqua Assembly. In 1879 Rev. W.B. Holt, who was stationed in Mayville, began ministering to the Chautauqua worshippers, and the Mayville pastor continued to care for the group until September 1882, when Rev. Victor Connelle became the first pastor officially assigned by the Erie Annual Conference. The co-founders of Chautauqua Institution, Bishop John H. Vincent and Mr. Lewis Miller, were interested in the local church and helped to maintain its unity as a community church when part of the congregation at one time considered starting a separate congregation.
