Dihybrid Cross is a musical anomaly. Folk, hip hop, and various other musical influences come together to create a sound that is original and provocative, aggressive and intuitive. Richard Shindell meets KRS ONE meets Robert Johnson meets U2 meets Allen Ginsberg. Or perhaps none of those comparisons are fair. Perhaps the Dihybrid sound is something totally new, an evolution of sound drawing heavily upon varied influences to create revolutionary stories.
The band consists of three members:
Mike Duck the musician & the philosopher Mike has a musician's ears. He finds the feel of each Dihybrid song and crafts them, giving them a controlled edge and a vibrance that resonates. Formerly the frontman of the Caribbean party band Wasting Daylight, he's been influenced by groups such as Live, REM, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, and more recently by Pink Floyd, David Bowie, and fellow Groovefest artists We're About 9. Mike recently returned from France where he played bar gigs and ate cheese. He probably knows more about Zorro than you do.
Jonathan Ratican the poet & the activist Jonathan has a background in hip hop and modern poetry, growing up on the music of Ice-T and Public Enemy while reading beat writers and Anne Rice novels. He is the former frontman of the rap group Undacova and he recently released his third album of solo music. In recent times he has also become an avid folkie, and thus a disciple of Ani Difranco, Dar Williams, Patty Griffin, and many more. His creative conscience gives the band its large imaginative spark, some of its unashamed wit, and most of its social consciousness. He is a vegetarian and a Capricorn. His hair has been alternately described as "cool", "fun", "unseemly", "ridiculous", "fiery", and "neat." He likes Dawson's Creek and he's not ashamed to admit it.
Mike "Mikey" Virts the fratboy & the player ...er... horn player... that's it, yeah... Mike is the newest addition to the band with a strong background in blues, jazz, and rock. He is the master of smooth and finesse. Mike is like the pitcher on your baseball team who you can always count on for a save. He adds the crucial details to the Dihybrid sound that make it not just good but freakin' awesome. He is a member of the Kappa Alpha Order. He enjoys long walks on the beach, Washington College dining hall food, and pediatric dentistry. He is not now, nor has he ever been, a member of the Communist Party.
So what does it sound like when it all comes together? Come out August 4th and find out!
