Great Meadows Morris and Sword Goes to England, page 2

The next day (Friday), after a breakfast kindly provided by our Goathland friends, Great Meadows split into tours of local schools. Candy Rapper and Slightly Green, along with the jovial lads of Sallyport, performed at Goathland. (Click on photo at far right to see a short video of Candy Rapper)

Also performing were the Ploughstot Juniors, who are helping to ensure that the Goathland longsword tradition will continue for years to come.

Slightly Green and Sallyport continued onto Sleights Elementary School, whose students graciously gave up their math and writing exercises to watch the show. (Click on photo at far right to see a video clip of Slightly Green, and watch Eilis subtly throw away her sunglasses.)

And then it was onto...Whitby!

Beside the Point, Candy Rapper and Slightly Green -- along with our fellow travelers from Boston, the Gay Blades -- all did a stand in front of the Endeavour, the ship Captain Cook sailed to Australia.

Great Meadows went its separate ways again, dancing at the Captain Cook monument and the Whitby Bandstand (that's Beside the Point way off in the distance), among other venues. (Right) Slightly Green was later invited -- not by the press gang, fortunately -- to dance on board the Endeavour.

Longsword, rapper and other traditional dance teams representing area schools converged on Whitby that afternoon, including one from Pocklington (far right) that gave a spirited rendition of the medieval combat dance "The Buffens."

After a bit of relaxation, during which Ian gave a dramatic reading of his souvenir poster, we all got back in our vans -- Beside the Point had customized theirs -- to check in at our accommodations for the festival...

...at The Eskdale School, where we were reunited with the just-arrived remaining members of our entourage. We made ourselves at home in the classrooms provided and went out to dinner in town.

Bloody tourists...
