Union Church Presbyterian Church Session Records 1820 - 1887

This book is a genealogist's treasure chest for anyone researching Jefferson County or surrounding area. Session records are filled with admission and dismissal dates, birth, baptismal, marriage, death dates. African Americans, referred to as servants, are recorded members as early as 1827 and their names are listed on servant membership and baptismal lists. Most of the servants are listed with their owners' name. Included are lists of pastors, elders and deacons of the church. Session minutes, also, contain the disciplinary actions issue by the Session to brethern found in a fault. The book has 233 pages plus an index.

EXAMPLES OF SESSION RECORDS
March 4th 1821 -- "The Session met at the request of the Moderator. When the certificates of Mr. Peter Wilkinson and Mrs. Wilkinson were presented by which it was heard that they were in good standing in the church from whence they came, and they wished to be connected with this church. It was resolved that they be and they hereby are received as members. Application being also made by Miss Elizabeth Wright, A. Smith, Jr., Gilbert Buie, Jr., Neil Buie, Jr., and J. Cubit for church membership. The Session proceeded to examination and their examination being satisfactory, they were also received."

October 21 1832 -- "The Session met at the call of the Moderator. Opened with prayer. When Uriah a servant of D. Buie, also an African woman Susan servant of Gilbert Buie, Jr., applied for admission to the communion. On motion resolved , after examination that they be received. So they went forth with baptized."

October 23rd 1840 -- "Mr. Peter McLaurin appeared before the Session and stated that sometime about 17 or 18 of September last, he had been guilty of the sin of intemperance and profane language. The said McLaurin professed repentance which was satisfactory to Session."
