African American Burials

Willie L Robinson visited this cemetery Thanksgiving weekend 2010. He was told that Pierce family members were buried there. He later discovered that this was the Calvin Blue Cemetery.

Nothing is known about Laura's background, the name of her parents, or by whom she was enslaved. Since she is buried in the Calvin Blue Cemetery, we have concluded that she was probably a slave of the Blue, Buie and or McLaurin family.

Census records indicate that Laura had two sons, William and Willis Pierce, born during the Civil War. The Pierce brothers are seen in the census records using the surname Benson and Pierce. Willis disappears after the 1870 census. William married Mattie Matier and on his marriage certificate both surnames Pierce and Benson appear on the record. Their father's name is unknown.

Laura married James Benson about 1867-68. The couple had several children.
