Dave Brown was born in Jefferson County, Mississippi, on the Cato Lathan Brown's place where he was a field hand.

He enlisted with the 58th Regiment, United States Colored Infantry 25 Aug 1863. He was described as 5 feet 6 inches tall, black complexion, eyes and hair. He served with David Baldwin and John Weed who were from the same area.

After the War, Dave used his father's surname which was Carter.

David Carter married Silva Stuart 14 Aug 1869 in Jefferson County. They were married by Reverend Morris Ellis. They had no children. Silvia died 15 Feb 1918 in Fayette, Jefferson County, Mississippi. Per Silva's death certificate, her parents were John and Silvia Oney.

Dave received a pension from the United States government based on his service and age.

Dave died 12 Mar 1924 in Fayette, Jefferson County, MS
