Gilbert Family Photo Album

These images originate from an old photo album handed down through generations. The dedication in the front cover reads: "Presented to Jane E. Gilbert by Charles F. Gilbert, Fond du Lac, October 21, 1870"

Jane was living in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin at the time and Charles was her son. The album contains many tin-type and studio card portraits of family and friends. The pictures were taken over a number of years and places vary from Wisconsin, Massachusetts, Michigan, and Jolliet, Quebec.

Jane Elizabeth (Frederick) Gilbert

Jane Elizabeth Frederick "was born August 8, 1838 in St. Johns, Lower Canada, District of Montreal." according to her obituary which appeared in a Fond du Lac newspaper, The Daily Commonwealth, Saturday, March 1, 1919. Her death certificate states she was the daughter of William Frederick (born in England) and Monica Maquin (born in France). In September 1856 she married Anthony Gilbert and as yet we have been unable to determine where. She died at the family home, by then in the pocession of her youngest daughter, Elnore Marcoe. She was 80 years, 6 months and 21 days old.

Anthony Gilbert

Anthony Gilbert born Antoine Gilbert dit Comtois son of Gilbert Gilbert dit Comtois and Marguerite Goulet. His birth date was July 17, 1830 in St. Thomas, Berthier, Lower Canada (now Quebec), Canada. One of a large family, he left Canada for parts south to make his way in life. He emigrated through Whitehall, New York in the year of 1847 and renounced his allegiance to "Victoria, Queen of Great Britain" to became a citizen of the United States on November 6, 1860. After this point he no longer uses the "Comtois" variation to his surname. He did however, add it as a second name in the christening of his last child. His obituary states that he came to Fond du Lac, Wisconsin from Troy, New York in 1857. We suspect that Troy is where he married Jane Elizabeth Frederick, but so far documentation has not been found.

The Fond du Lac City Directory 1868-1869 states that Anthony was a machinist at Union Iron Works and lived on Scott Street 2 houses east of Washington. We think that he brought this trade from Troy where he was possibly in business with family friend, John B. Gauslin.

Anthony and Jane produced a large family in Fond du Lac. He died October 16 , 1905 in Fond du Lac and is buried in The Taycheedah Cemetery there.

Gilbert Gilbert dit Comtois

Gilbert Gilbert dit Comtois was born October 8, 1798 in Berthier, Lower Canada, (Quebec). He married Marguerite Goulet January, 20 1822 in St. Cuthbert, Jolliette, Lower Canada. Together they produced a large family. Little is know about Gilbert at this point. His occupation continues to elude us but we have decided it is unlikely that he was a farmer of any sort. The reason being that his children were christened at various different parishes in Lower Canada. So far we can attribute 14 children to this industrious couple, the last born in 1853. Marguerite died shorly after and Gilbert remarried Sophronie Mandeville August 17, 1856. So far we have not found any offspring for this couple. (pictured on homepage) Sophronie was remarried in 1882 but we have not yet determined when Gilbert departed this world.
