Burneile Marie (Olinger) Melton (1909-1985)

Burneile Marie Olinger was born in Portland Township on April 28, 1909, to George and Louise Slocum Olinger. She attended Erie Schools and was graduated from Erie High School with the Class of 1927.

She was married to James C. Melton on August 27, 1927, in Rock Island, IL. Six children were born to this couple, two boys and four girls. Their fifth-born son, Robert Lee Melton, died on August 20, 1940, at the age of 3 years, 10 months and 20 days, when his father accidentally ran over him with the car.

After her family was grown, Mrs. Melton worked at General Electric in Morrison, and as a telephone operator in Erie. Later she worked in Richard Shilling’s men’s clothing store.

Mr. and Mrs. Melton celebrated their 50th anniversary on August 27, 1977. They were members of Erie Christian Church. Mrs. Melton died at Morrison Community Hospital’s Extended Care on February 2, 1985, leaving five adult children, twenty grandchildren and many great-grandchildren.
