Elizabeth (Blean) Hawk (1857-1943)

Elizabeth Blean was the daughter of James and Hettie Weekly Blean, early settlers of Newton Township. She was born in that township on December 15, 1857. She lived there and in Erie all her life.

Her father, James Blean, was a second lieutenant in the Northern Army during the Civil War, and died in the battle of Perryville in 1862. [Records in the National Archives show that Mr. Blean died of wounds on October 9, 1862, the day after the battle of Perryville. He was in Company B of the 75th Illinois Volunteers.]

Miss Blean was married to John Hawk of Newton on March 16, 1882, and they celebrated their 60th anniversary the spring before their deaths. She was an active church worker in the Methodist Church and in its women’s organizations. She and her husband had four children, William, Pearl, Arthur and Hettie, and eight grandchildren.
