He was a graduate of Iowa State University and was a lawyer, although he never practiced his profession. He taught school, second grade, until his untimely death of heart failure. He had been married to Minnie Smith on November 4, 1888, and they made their home in Hillsdale. He had two children, Edna and Charles.
