Re: Edwards' Family

Yes, we are both researching the same family. James Edwards is my fifth greatgrandfather. I have lots of information on him as he is pretty well documented in local histories of Ocean County and Barnegat. I live two hours from Barnegat so I am able to go down often and research. Here is my family line: James Edwards and Elizabeth Heddy ( Huddy) married May 24,1763 Children: Zepher, George,James, Thomas, Deborah, Elizabeth, Amy, Prudence, Keturah

Thomas Edwards married Phoebe Comstock ( Of Elizabethtown NJ)
Children: George, Samuel, THomas, Richard, Maryann, Eliza

George Edwards married Hannah Mills
Children: Nelson Edwards, Maryann Edwards, Phoebe Edwards, Mills Edwards and Amanda Edwards

Phoebe Edwards married John Inman

Let me know where your family comes in as I have lots on this family from letters and books published at the turn of the century. I have a picture of James Edwards house in Barnegat which is owned by the Barnegat Historical Society, a picture of his Memorial Marker at the Masonic cemetery in Barnegat and many picyures of Edwards family from Phoebe Edwards Inman's photo book.

What I have not found so far are James Edwards parents. I have his service records which point to his family as coming from around Kent County Delaware and a reference to his being found mentioned in an early book on the history of the area. I have not yet found Elizabeth Heddy ( Huddy) parents . I Believe she may have been related to Captain Josuah Huddy famous for the Battle Of Monmouth.

I don't know if anyone has joined the DAR recently, but someone in our family had all the paper work done ages ago using James Edwards. I have the papers, that have been handed down a few generations.

Like you I have not been able to find much on Phoebe Comstock...there are quite a few Phoebe Comstock's out there. She did come from Elizabethtown which is in Monmouth County...I have not searched there!

I looked up your Edwards in the 1878 map of Barnegat published by the Woolman and Rose Atlas. There are two S Edwards living on Bay Street almost across the street from each other. One house was probably that of Samuel and the other was Sarah Edwards widow of Thomas. I think both houses are still there...they are in the same block as my family... mostly sailing captains homes. I will take pictures next time I get down to Barnegat.

1880 Census
Sarah Edwards 46
Samuel Edwards 20
Freddi Edwards 18
Thomas Edwards 15

1900 Census
Sarah Ridgeway Edwards 65 widow of Thomas Grace Predmore grand daughter 26

!868 list of people drawing pensions in Barnegat:
Sarah Edwards $25.00 dollars a month from the Navy. ( This was a lot more money than the Army was giving out in pensions)

I'm glad to be able to you with Gingers family history. I love my Barnegat families...it was such a small community that almost everybody was related to each other in some way. I have both my great grandmother's and great great grandmother's photo albums from Barnegat and the pictures are all identified which is unusual. I have had them restored, so I started researching the names to see how they were related to each other. When I go to the cemetery I feel I know so many of these people. At any rate Barnegat has changed little in the past one hundred years, since it is on the mainland by the bay, it has been passed over by the tourist trade. I will try to send more about the town and it's history for Ginger. Did I send you a copy of the 45 page letter written by George Tom Cranmer? It deals with some Edwards history also. Every local book written about the area mentions James Edwards. Saw the following posted yesterday and thought you might get a kick out of what was news a hundred years ago in Barnegat.

The following is under "County News" from the 13 Dec. 1906 NJ Courier.

Barnegat
The wedding of Miss Mineola Chandler, daughter of Capt. Alex S. Chandler, to Mr. W.M. Clark, will take place in New York on Dec. 15.
W.G. Conrad and wife have been spending a few days in Trenton, returning Monday.
Mrs. and Miss Stephenson were visitors to Philadelphia last week.
Mrs. Kate Falkinburg has been spending a few days with her sister.
Capt. W.F. Randolph was home last week.
Mrs. J.C. Bennett and Mrs. A.H. Tolbert entertained the Ladies Aid Society at the latter's home on Thursday last.
The Cook Comedy Company commenced a weeks engagement at the opera house last Friday.

The sugar ship which went ashore at Pehala last Monday, called several visitors from here, but when they got over there they found that the wrecking steamer had pulled her off and she was on her way to Philadelphia.

The interior alterations in the former drug store for the purpose of a bank are about done and the safe is expected (missing word). Then with a little paint our new bank will be ready for business. Report says that the schooner Florence I. Lockwood, Capt. Wm. A Taylor, of this town, was lost last Thursday, but no particulars are at hand at this time.

Capt. Charles Cox, one of our oldest citizens, died on Saturday evening last at the age of 87 years. Capt. Cox has been an invalid for a number of years past. Before his affliction he was one of our best known baymen and was a favorite captain with the visiting sportsmen. His funeral was held yesterday and interment was made here.

The Cox house is probably the biggest and still best kept house in Barnegat.
