If the DOB for James Edwards is right, he would have been 48 years old when he married. That seems late. I would think that he was married first to someone else. Is Elizabeth Heady his second wife? Information received from Pat Lewis: The Edwards family Author: James Edward, I, served in the Colonial, French and Indian War, and War of the Revolution Old Times in Ocean County, Written for the N J. Courier by on. Edwin Salter, 1871. The Edwards Familh, "The Edwards family in the sourther part of Ocean county, with brances elsewhere, are descended from James Edwar, who was with Braddock at the time of his disastrous defeat in the Old French Wa. After that war he settled in Pennsylvania, and thence removed to Little Egg Harbor, thence to Barnegat." The article goes on to state, "Mrs. Leah Blackman in her Egg Harbor Skates, states that James Edwards was wounded in the battle and received a musket ball in the leg which he carried to his graves; and she adds, 'he lived to an advanced age and was buried in the Methodist Church yard at Tuckerton. He was a soldier in the revolutin and fought under Washington, who he loved with undying affection'' Additionally the article states, "James Edwards was one of the first, probably the first, adherent to Methodism in Barnegat and vicinity and conti ued until his death as a strict, faithful membe or the society. His two son, James and Thomas, do not seem to have united with any religious body. James Edwards and Elizabeth (Heady) Edwards had 9 children and 51 grandchildren. Among James' neighbors, he was called Captain. Authorities all agree that James settled in Pennsylvania before the Revolution and must have served with the troops from that state. Certified proof comes from the archives of PA record that he was a Captain with the Colonial troops, and afterwards,in the Revolution, belonged to Colonel Thomas Proctor's celebrated artillery regiment.
