Deniz John Turkan

A Little Angel, A Little Sweatheart,A Little Survivar ,A Little Warrior,A Little Hero... This is A story about my son's Cancer and Our fight

It was a Sunday morning that would change our lives forever when Deniz woke up in the morning he was in so much pain he could not walk he crawled out into the living room we got dressed and took him to the emergency room. They did x-ray's and ultra sounds and saw something but, they were not sure what they saw they thought his liver was enlarged they were not expert's with pediatrics at this hospital and they said they wanted to transfer him to a children's hospital. At the children's hospital they knew right away what it was it was Wilms Tumor. Thanksgiving day 2001 he went into surgery for a biopsy and we talked to the Dr. and he confirmed it was Wilms Tumor which is a cancerous tumor and it had spread to his lungs the tumor was a rapid growing tumor and it was the size of a football and it was wrapped around several organs so taking it out was not an option at that point we had to have chemotherapy and radiation to try to shrink it after several weeks of chemo it was small enough to remove and on Dec. 27th 2001 they removed the tumor but, we still had to go every week to the Dr for chemotherapy to treat his lungs and any cells that may have been left in the abdomen. Deniz was a small boy and he ended up losing 15 lbs and could not keep any food down so he had to have a bag filled with nutrition pumped into him 24 hours a day. It was very hard for him he got tired so easily and wanted to play but, could only play for a limited time before he would have to lay down and rest but, if you didn't know he had cancer and was going through hell you wouldn't even have realized it because he is always smiling and making the most out of life like any child would. The last week in June we were told his cancer was gone this was the happiest day of our lives. That happiness was short lived when on August 9th 2002 we found out his cancer was back, he had three tumors in his lungs which would require more aggressive treatment. We were devastated, it hit us harder the second time I think because we finally thought the nightmare is over and it slaps us in the face again. This time his chemo would require a 6 day hospital stay every 2 weeks and after 13 weeks surgery to remove the tumors off his lungs if they are still there and after that 6 months of chemo. No one ever thinks this can happen to them. I know we always thought that but, the reality is that it can happen to you, it can happen to anyone. At this point we are financially, emotionally and physically drained but, we have to go on and be strong for Deniz. We want to give Deniz the world and sadly we cannot do this. There are so many people in this world that have so much if everyone could give a little no one would ever have to go hungry or suffer in this world. I remember one Christmas we had very little money and had to go the dollar store and find a few cheap toy's for our children so they would have something to open after paying I had $5.06 left walking of the store there was a lady standing leaning against the wall she was not begging for money but, she looked homeless I put the $5.06 in her hand and told her Merry Christmas she smiled and her eyes lit up and she said thank you and God Bless you. I was angry at myself for giving away the last of my money but, I felt so good and I didn't care I knew everything would work out for us in the long run. We are not asking for much but, 5.00 can make a difference if everyone could spare 5.00 or more we could buy Deniz The World.
