Materials: J. & P. Coats Knit-Cro-Sheen, 2 balls, or Clark's O.N.T. Cronita, 3 balls, White or Ecru, for set of 4 mats. Milward's steel crochet hook No. 3.

Work starts at corner indicated in chart. Ch 9, turn. I dc in fourth ch from hook, 1 dc in each of next 5 ch sts (2 blocks), ch 10, turn.

2nd row: Sl st in 2nd ch from hook, sl st in each of next 6 sts, skip next 2 ch sts and first dc, dc in each of next 6 dc (turning ch of previous row counts as 1 d c), ch 8, turn.

3rd row: Dc in 4th ch from hook, dc in each of next 4 ch sts, dc in first dc of previous row, ch 2, skip 2 dc, d c in next dc (1 sp), ch 2, skip 2 dc, l dc in each of 7 sl sts of previous row, ch 3, turn. From here on make blocks and spaces as shown on the chart, increasing 2 blocks at each end every second row as explained above.

If a larger mat is desired, continue increasing after the 25th row. Then, to decrease the 2 blocks at beginning and end of rows, sl st in first 7 sts, ch 3, and continue with chart, working to within 7 sts from end of row.

When mat is finished, do not break thread, but continue around for finishing edge. Ch 5, turn, skip 2 dc, dc in next, ch 2, skip 2 dc, 1 dc in next dc, ch 4, 1 dc in same place (to turn corner), ch 2, 1 dc at base of same dc, skip 1 row, 1 dc between last 2 blocks of following row, ch 2, dc in last dc of same row, ch 4, dc in same place, and continue around entire edge. Fasten off and break thread.
