Directions are given for "STAR" Cotton Yarn and "STAR" Rug Yarn. "AUNT LYDIA" Heavy Rug Yarn is given in parenthesis.
With Cream ch 19 (15), sl st in 2nd st from hook, 1 sc in each of the next 7 (5) sts of ch, * insert hook in next st of ch, pull loop through, repeat from *, yarn over and pull through all loops on hook (a decrease), 1 sc in each of the next 7 (5) sts of ch, sl st in next st, break yarn, leaving a 3 inch length.
2nd Row.Ch 10 (8), 1 sc and 1 sl st in last sl st of 1st row, 1 sc in each of the next 15 (10) sts, 1 sl st and 1 sc in next st, ch 11 (9), turn.
3rd Row. Sl st in 2nd st from hook, sl st in next st of ch, sc in next 2 (1) sts of ch, decrease 1 st, sc in next 2 (1) sts of ch, sl st in last 2 sts of ch, skip 1 st, sc in next 17 (12) sts, skip next st, sl st in next 2 sts of ch, sc in next 2 (1) sts of ch, decrease 1 st, sc in next 2 (1) sts of ch, sl st in last 2 sts of ch, ch 1, turn.
4th Row. 1 sc in each of the next 35 (26) sts, ch 1, turn.
Repeat 4th row 3 (1) times.
8th (6th) Row. Decrease 2 sts, 1 s c in each of the next 27 (18) sts, decrease 2 sts, ch 1, turn.
9th (7th) Row. 1 sc in each sc, 31 (22) sc, ch 1, turn.
Repeat 9th (7th) row 5 (4) times.
15th (12th) Row. Working in sc, increase 1 st in each of the 1st 2 sts, 1 sc in each of the next 27 (18) sts, increase 1 st in each of the next 2 sts, ch 1. turn.
16th to 22nd (13th to 16th) Rows. Work even in sc.
23rd (17th) Row. Decrease 1 st, sl st in next st (omit sl st) , increase 1 sc in each of the next 2 sts, sl st in next St (Omit sl st) , decrease 1 sc, 1 sc in each of the next 19 (14) sc, decrease 1 st, sl st in next st (omit sl st) increase 1 st in each of the next 2 sts, sl st in next st (omit sl st) , decrease 1 st, break yarn, turn work. Attach yarn in 9th (7th) st from end and work 1 sc in same space, 1 sc in each of the next 18 (13) sts, ch 1, turn.
Next Row. 1 sc in each of the 19 (14) s c, ch 1, turn.
Next Row. Skip 1 sc, 1 sc in each of the next 5 (2) sts, decrease in next 2 sts, ch 1, turn.
Next Row. Skip 1 st. 1 sc in each of the next 3 (2) sts, (break yarn for "Aunt Lydia") , decrease in next 2 sts, break yarn, turn work. Skip the 3 (2) center sts of last long row, attach yarn and decrease one st, 1 sc in each of the next 4 (2) sts, decrease in next 2 sts, ch 1, turn, skip 1 st, 1 sc in each of the next 3 (2) sts, (break yarn for "Aunt Lydia"), decrease in next 2 sts, break yarn.
Work a row of sc all around working a sl st in center sc between last two sections and at ear angles and increasing as necessary around curves.
TONGUE: With Red "STAR" Six Strand Embroidery Cotton ch 4, 12 dc in 4th st from hook, ch 3, turn.
2nd Row. Dc in same space, * 2 dc in next dc, 1 dc in next d , repeat from * 4 times, 2 dc in next dc, 2 dc in ch 3, break thread.
NOSE: With Red ch 6, join to form a ring, ch 3, 15 dc in ring, join.
2nd Row. Ch 2, * 2 sdc in next dc (sdc: thread over hook, insert in st, thread over and pull through all loops at one time), 1 sdc in next d c, repeat from *all around, join, break thread.
Attach Black in any sdc, ch 2, 1 sdc in each of the next 3 sdc, break thread.
EYE: With Black work same as 1st row of nose.
2nd Row. Ch 1, * 2 sc in next dc, 1 sc in next dc, repeat from all around, join, then ch 20, sl st in 8th sc, break thread. Work another eye in same manner.
Sew tongue to center of lower edge. Sew nose in position as illustrated having the Black spot at top. Sew eyes in position as illustrated.
With Black using 12 strands, embroider half inch eye brows starting at row above eyes. With Black embroider 3 whiskers on each side of nose. With Black using 12 strands, embroider a line in outline st between face and ear on each side of section.
BACK SECTION: Work same as front section for 14 (9) rows.
15th 110th) Row. Working in sc increase 1 st in each of the 1st 2 sts, 1 sc in each of the next 21 (16) sts, ch 1. turn.
Work 7 (5) rows even in sc, break yarn.
23rd (16th) Row. Attach yarn in 7th (5th) sc from end of 14th (10th) row and work 5 (3) sc, increase 1 sc in each of the last 2 sts, ch 1, turn.
Work 7 (4) rows even in sc, break yarn.
Rows 15 to 30 (10 to 20) form thumb opening.
31st (21st) Row. Turn work, attach yarn at beginning of row, ch 1, decrease 1 st, sl st in next st, (omit sl st) increase 1 sc in each of the next 2 sts, sl st in next st, (omit sl st) decrease 1 sc, 1 sc in each of the next 17 (12) sc, ch 1, sc in 1st sc of small section, decrease 1 st, sl st in next st, (omit sl st) increase 1 sc in each of the next 2 sts, sl st in next st, (omit sl st) decrease 1 st, break yarn.
Attach yarn in 9th (7th) st from end and work 1 sc in same space, sc in ch 1, 1 sc in each of the next 17 (12) sts, ch 1, turn. Finish back section same as front section.
THUMB: With Cream work 16 (12) sc around thumb opening and without joining rows work 6 (3) more rows even.
Next Row. Decrease 4 (3) sts evenly spaced then work 2 (1) rows even. Decrease every other st until 5 (3) sts remain, break yarn leaving an end. Thread into needle ad draw together, fasten firmly..
Sew sections together starting at 1st ear angle at top of potholder sewing across top of head, side and lower edge to opposite ear angle, break yarn.
With Red cover a bone ring with sc and sew to middle of back section about 1 inch from top.
