Materials: 2 Balls CYNTHIA Mercerized Crochet Cotton, White or Ecru. Size 10. Boye Steel Crochet Hook, No. 8.

When completed the chair back measures approx. 10 x 12 1/2 inches and each arm piece 5 1/2 x 10 inches. Large motif should measure 3 inches in diameter.

CHAIR BACK-LARGE MOTIF

Ch 8, join with slip st to form ring.

1st round: Ch 4 (to count as 1 D C and ch 1), * 1 D C in ring, ch 1, repeat from * 10 times, join with slip st in 3rd st of ch 4 (12 D C).

2nd round: Ch 5 (to count as 1 D C and ch 2), * 1 D C in next D C, ch 2, repeat from * 10 times, join with slip st in 3rd st of ch 5 (12 spaces).

3rd round: Ch 14 (to count as 1 D C and ch 11), * 1 D C in next D C, ch 11, repeat from * 10 times, join with slip st in 3rd st of ch 14 (12 loops).

4th round: Slip st over to center (6th st) of 1st loop, ch 2, skip 2 sts, thread over hook 3 times, insert hook in next (9th) st of loop and work 1 D C as follows: draw thread through, thread over hook and draw through 2 loops, thread over a second time and draw through 2 loops (3 loops remaining on hook), thread over hook again, insert hook in 3rd st of next loop, draw thread through (5 loops on hook), thread over hook and take off 2 loops at a time 4 times (2 spaces made), ch 5, 1 D C in top of D C (between the first 2 spaces), ch 2, slip st in center (6th st) of second loop (this completes first point of 4 spaces), * ch 2, skip 2 sts, thread over hook 3 times, insert hook in next (9th) st of loop, work 1 D C same as D C in preceding loop, (3 loops remaining on hook), thread over hook, insert hook in 3rd st of next loop, thread over and take off 2 loops at a time 4 times, ch 5, 1 D C in top of DC (between the first 2 spaces), ch 2, slip st in 6th st of next loop, repeat from * 10 times, join with slip st in slip st at beginning of round and fasten off. This completes 1 motif.

Make 17 more motifs. Place them in position as in illustration, having 5 motifs in each of 1st 3 rows and 3 motifs in 4th row; sew 2 points of each motif to corresponding 2 points on adjacent motifs, or join on 4th round as follows: after completing 1st 2 spaces of a point, ch 2, join with slip st to corresponding point on adjacent motif, ch 2, and complete point; continue joining 2 points of each motif to corresponding 2 points on adjacent motifs.

FILL IN MOTIF

Ch 6, join with slip st to form ring.

1st round: Ch 3, 1 D C in ring, ch 2, join with slip st to free point on motif, ch 2, slip st in D C just made, ch 2, 2 D C in ring, ch 4, slip st in 1st st of ch (picot), * 2 D C in ring, join in same way to next free point, 2 D C in ring, a ch-4 picot, repeat from * twice, join with slip st in 3rd st of ch 3 and fasten off. This completes fill-in motif that joins one group of motifs. Fill in all spaces in same way.

ARM PIECES

Make 7 motifs as for chair back and join, having 2 motifs in each of the 1st, 2nd and 3rd rows and 1 motif on the 4th row. Work fill-in motifs in spaces between the 1st and 2nd rows, and the 2nd and 3rd rows, place motif on 4th row between the 2 motifs on 3rd row and omit fill-in.
