"Snowflake" Doilies Bucilla Volume 115 1937 |
Directions are given for the following 3 sizes :- 9 inch square - 11 inch square - 13 inch square. (All sizes are approximate)
MATERIALS: Bucilla Floraltone Wondersheen (mercerized) Cotton. Article 3780.
For individual doilies use:
Main Color Contrasting Color (or Harmonizing)
9 Inch doily.....1 skein....................................... 1 skein
11 Inch doily...1 skein....................................... 1 skein
13 Inch doily...1 skein....................................... 1 skein
For a set of 3 doilies (1 of each size) use:
3 skeins Main Color, 2 skeins Contrasting (or Harmonizing) Color.
1 Bucilla Steel Crochet Hook, Size 9
Gauge: 12 double crochet (d c) stitches = 1 inch 4 rows = l inch
These doilies are worked with 1 strand of thread being carried inside of the double crochet (d c) stitches in pattern.
SMALL DOILY-With main color (m c) ch 83, work 1 d c in 4th st from hook (A on chart), 1 d c in each st to end of chain (81 d c in row, including the turning chain, which always counts as the first d c).
2nd row: ch 3, turn, lay a strand of contrasting color (c c) thread along the top of row below; working over the c c strand, with m c work 1 d c in 2nd st of row below, thread over, draw up a loop in next st, over and through 2 loops on hook, drop m c, pick up c c and draw through the remaining 2 loops on hook, thus changing color in this st, * with c c and working over the m c, work 1 d c in each of the next 2 sts, change to m c in next st, working over the c c, make 1 d c in each of the next 14 sts, change to c c in next st; repeat from * 3 times, then with c c and working over the m c, work 1 d c in each of the next 2 sts, change to m c in next st, with m c and working over c c, work 1 d c in each of the last 2 sts of row below, 1 d c in top st of turning chain below.
3rd row: ch 3, turn, lay the c c thread along top of row below, working over the c c thread, with m c work 1 d c in 2nd st below, 1 d c in each of the next 3 sts, change to c c in next st, with c c and working over m c work 1 d c in each of the next 2 sts, change to m c in next st and working over c c work 1 d c in each of the next 8 sts, change to c c in next st; continue in this way to follow chart (each space on chart represents 3 d c) across, end with 1 d c in top st of turning chain.
From now on continue to follow chart to end, when there will be 27 rows completed from beginning; fasten off both threads and darn in ends neatly. Piece should now measure 6 3/4 inches square.
BORDER-With m c and working from right side of work (wrong side of last row) work 3 d c in first st, * 1 d c in each st to next corner, 6 d c in corner st, then work 2 d c around post of end st in next row down side of piece, 3 d c around post of each end d c down side of square to within 1 row of corner, 2 d c around the post of next d c, 5 d c in corner st; repeat from * around, thus working along remaining 2 sides in same way, end with 2 d c in same place as the first 3 d c of round, join with a slip st in top of first d c and fasten off thread (336 sts in round).
2nd round: with c c and working from same side as last round, work 1 d c in center st of the group of 5 in any corner, ch 5, work 1 more d c in same st, * ch 2, skip 2 sts, work 1 d c in next st; repeat from * to next corner, work this corner like first then continue around remaining 3 sides of square in same way, end with ch 2, join with a slip st in first d c of round and fasten off thread (28 spaces on each side of square not counting the corner spaces).
3rd round: working from same side as last round, with m c work 9 d c in a corner space, 3 d c in each space to next corner, work this corner like first, then continue in this way around, working all corners alike, join with a slip st in first d c of round and fasten off thread.
4th round: with c c and working from same side as last round, work 1 d c in center st of the group of 9 in any corner, ch 5, 1 more d c in same st, * ch 2, skip 2 sts, work 1 d c in next st; repeat from * to next corner, work this corner like first then continue around remaining 3 sides of square in same way, join and fasten off thread.
Final round: with m c and working from same side as last round, work 2 d c in a corner space, ch 3, slip st in top of last d c made (picot), 3 more d c in same space, ch 3, picot, 2 more d c in same space, * 2 d c in next space, ch 3, picot, 1 more d c in same space; repeat from * to next corner, work this corner space same as last then continue around, working all corners alike, join with a slip st in first d c of round and fasten off thread. Darn in all ends neatly.
MEDIUM SIZED DOILY-With m c, ch 107, work 106 d c on chain, then following chart for medium sized doily and the directions for changing color as described for small doily, work until there will be 35 rows completed, when square should measure 8 3/4 inches. Finish with same border as for small doily, having 432 d c in 1st round of border.
LARGE DOILY-With m c, ch 137, work 135 d c on chain, then following chart for large doily and the directions for changing color as described for small doily, work until there will be 45 rows completed from beginning when square should measure 11 1/4 inches. Finish with same border as for small doily, having 552 d c in 1st round of border. Darn in all ends neatly.
