MATERIALS: For doily 7" in diameter: Six cord mercerized crochet cotton, size 30, 1 small ball of white or ecru; steel crochet hook. No. 10.
Starting at center, ch 15. Sl st to form ring.
1st rnd: Ch 3, dc in ring, (ch 2, 2 dc in ring) 9 times; ch 2, sl st to 3rd ch of ch-3.
2nd rnd: Sl st in next dc, sl st in sp, ch 3, in same sp make dc, ch 2 and 2 dc (shell made); * ch 2, in next sp make 2 dc, ch 2 and 2 dc (another shell made). Repeat from * around, ending with ch 2, sl st to 3rd ch of ch-3.
3rd rnd: Sl st in next dc, sl st in next sp, ch 3, in same sp make dc, ch 2 and 2 dc (shell over shell made), * ch 4, skip next sp, make a shell in sp of next shell. Repeat from * around, ending with ch 4, sl st in 3rd ch of ch-3.
4th rnd: Sl st to next sp, ch 3, in same sp make 2 dc, ch 2 and 3 dc (shell over shell made); * ch 3, in sp of next shell make a shell of 3 dc, ch 2 and 3 dc. Repeat from * around. Join.
5th rnd: * Make shell over shell as for previous rnd, ch 3, sc in next sp two rnds below, working over the two chains, ch 3. Repeat from * around. Join.
6th rnd: * Make shell over shell, having 4 dc, ch 2 and 4 dc for shell, ch 5. Repeat from * around. Join.
7th rnd: * Make shell over shell, having 5 dc, ch 3 and 5 dc for shell, ch 5. Repeat from * around. Join.
8th rnd: Sl st to center of shell, ch 4, in center of shell make 4 dc, ch 3, 4 dc, ch 1 and dc; * ch 4, sc in next sp two rnds below, working over the two chains, ch 4, in center of next shell make dc, ch 1, 4 dc, ch 3, 4 dc, ch 1 and dc. Repeat from * around. Sl st to 3rd ch of ch-4.
9th rnd: Sl st in next sp, ch 3, in same sp make dc, ch 2 and 2 dc; * ch 3, in next sp at center of shell make 2 dc, ch 2 and 2 dc; ch 3, in next ch-1 sp make 2 dc, ch 2 and 2 dc; ch 4, in next ch-1
sp make 2 dc, ch 2 and 2 dc. Repeat from * around. Join.
10th rnd: * Make shell over shell, having 3 dc, ch 2 and 3 dc for shell, ch 2. Repeat from * around. Join.
11th rnd: * Shell over shell, having 3 dc, ch 3 and 3 dc for shell, ch 3, sc in next sp two rnds below, working over both chains, ch 3. Repeat from * around. Join.
12th rnd: Sl st to sp of next shell, ch 12, * dc in ch-3 sp of next shell, ch 9. Repeat from * around. Sl st in 3rd ch of ch-12.
13th rnd: Sl st in next sp, ch 3, in same sp make 5 dc, '' ch 2 and 6 dc, ch 2, in next sp make 6 dc. Repeat from * around, ending with 6 dc, ch 2 and 6 dc in last sp, half dc in 3rd ch of ch-3.
14th rnd: Sl st in sp formed by the half dc, ch 3, in same sp make 2 dc, * ch 2 and 3 dc, ch 3, dc in next ch-2 sp, ch 3, in next ch-2 sp make 3 dc. Repeat from * around. Join.
15th rnd: * Shell over shell, having 3 dc, ch 2 and 3 dc for shell; ch 6, skip next dc. Repeat from * around. Join.
16th rnd: * Shell over shell, making 4 dc, ch 2 and 4 dc for shell, ch 5, sc in dc on 14th rnd, working over both chains, ch 5. Repeat from * around. Join and break off.
