Repeat from * around, ending with ch 4; sl st in tip of 1st pc st made.
3rd rnd; Sl st in next sp, ch 3, 4 dc in same sp; make 5 dc in each remaining sp around. Join with sl st in 3rd st of ch-3.
4th rnd: Picking up only the back loop of each dc, make dc in each st around, increasing as necessary to keep work flat. Join.
Repeat 4th rnd until piece measures 1/2 inch less than surface of compact.
Now work a rnd of pc sts as before, skipping 1 dc between pc sts and having ch 3 (instead of ch-5) between. Fasten off. Make another piece same as this.
Sew pieces together along outer edges with neat over-and-over sts, leaving an opening large enough for compact.
