Gauge: 12 double crochet (d c) stitches =1 inch  4 rows=1 inch

This doily is worked with 1 strand of thread being carried inside of the double crochet (d c) stitches in pattern.

With contrasting color (c c) ch 59, work 1 d c in 4th st from hook (A on chart), 1 d c in each st to end of chain (57 d c in row, including the ch 3 at beginning of row which always counts as the first d c).

2nd row: ch 8, turn, work 6 d c on chain (including the turning chain), lay a strand of main color (m c) along top of row below; working over the m c thread, with c c work 1 d c in each of the next 2 sts, thread over hook, draw up a loop in next st, over and through 2 loops on hook, drop c c, pick up m c and draw through the remaining 2 loops on hook, thus changing color in this st, with m c and working over the c c, work 1 d c in each of the next 8 sts, change to c c in next st, working over the m c, with c c work 1 d c in each of the next 2 sts, change to m c in next st, working over the c c, with m c work 1 d c in each of the next 2 sts, change to c c in next st, working over the m c, with c c work 1 d c in each of the next 2 sts, change to m c; continue in this way to follow chart (each space on chart represents 3 d c) across to within 3 sts of end of row, fasten off m c thread at end of every row (this will not be mentioned again), working with c c work 1 d c in each of the last 2 sts of row below, make a "foundation d c" in next st as follows: thread over hook, draw  up a loop in top st of turning chain below, over and through 1 loop (this makes a "foundation st" for next d c), over and through 2 loops, over and through remaining 2 loops, thread over, insert hook in "foundation st" made in last "foundation d c" and draw up a loop, finish the d c, same as the last d c; make 5 more "foundation d c" (7 "foundation d c" in all, 6 d c added at end of row-2 spaces on chart).

3rd row: ch 23, turn, work 21 d c on chain, 1 d c in each of the next 2 sts, lay m c along edge of row below, change to m c in next st, working over the c c thread, work 1 d c in each of the next 17 sts, change to c c; continue to follow chart to end of row below, then work 21 "foundation d c" at end of row as shown on chart.

In this way follow chart, changing colors as shown and working steps as before until there are 8 rows completed from beginning.

9th row: ch 3, turn, work 1 d c in 2nd st below, change to m c in next st, continue to follow chart to end of row.

Continue to follow chart as before until there are 27 rows completed from beginning.

28th row: turn, slip st in each of the first 4 sts (a decreasing step), ch 3, 1 d c in next st, change to m c in next st, continue to follow chart across, leaving the last 3 sts free at end of row, thus decreasing at each end of same row.

From now on continue to follow chart to end, increasing and decreasing 3 sts to every space as described above. Fasten off both threads and darn in all ends neatly.
