Size 30: 22 balls of No. 1 White, No. 61 Ecru or No. 42 Cream for small

cloth; or 29 balls for large cloth; or

CLARK'S "BIG BALL" MERCERIZED CROCHET, Art. B. 34, Size 30:

16 balls of No. 1 White, No. 61 Ecru or No. 42 Cream for small cloth;

or 21 balls for large cloth; or

CLARK'S "BIG BALL" MERCERIZED CROCHET, Art. B. 345, Size 30:

9 balls of White or Ecru only for small cloth or 12 balls for large cloth.

Small Cloth measures 63 1/2 x 63 1/2 inches;

Large Cloth measures 63 1/2 x 85 1/2 inches.

Each motif measures 5 1/2 inches square and requires 41 1/2 yards.

FIRST MOTIF . . . Starting at center, ch 10. Join with sl st to form ring.

1st rnd; Ch 6, in ring make (dc, ch 2, tr, ch 7, tr, ch 2) 3 times, dc, ch 2 and tr; ch 3, tr in 4th ch of ch-6 to join and form last ch-7 loop (count first 4 ch of ch-6 as 1 tr).

2nd rnd: In loop make sc, ch 5 and sc (corner); ch 5, tr in joining of first rnd, ch 2, d tr in next dc, ch 2, tr in next tr, ch 5, (in next loop make sc, ch 5 and sc.-corner; ch 5, tr in next tr, ch 2, d tr in next dc, ch 2, tr in next tr, ch 5) 3 times. Join to first sc.

3rd rnd: Sl st in next 3 ch, ch 6, dc in same loop (starting V st made); * ch 3, (3 dc in next sp, dc in next st) 3 times; 3 dc in next sp, ch 3, in next loop make dc, ch 3 and dc (another V st made). Repeat from * around, ending with ch 3. Join to 3rd ch of ch 6.

4th rnd: In V-st sp make sl st, ch 6 and dc (starting V st over V st made); * ch 5, skip next sp, sc in next dc, (ch 3, skip next dc, sc in next dc) 7 times; ch 5, V st in next V-st sp (V st over V st made). Repeat from * around, ending with ch 5. Join as on previous rnd.

5th rnd: * V st over V st, ch 5, 5 dc in next ch-3 loop, ch 1; 2 dc in next loop, ch 1, skip next loop, 7 tr in next loop, ch 1, skip next loop, 2 dc in next loop, ch 1, 5 dc in next loop, ch 5. Repeat from * around. Join as before.

6th rnd: * V st over V st, ch 5, skip next sp holding back on hook the last loop of each st, dc in next 3 dc, thread over and draw through all 4 loops on hook (cluster made), ch 5, 3-dc cluster over last dc used and next 2 dc; skip next 2 dc; making tr's instead of dc's, make a 3-tr cluster over next 3 tr, (ch 5, 3-tr cluster over last tr used and next 2 tr) twice; skip next 2 dc, 3-dc cluster over next 3 dc, ch 5, 3-dc cluster over last dc used and next 2 dc, ch 5. Repeat from * around. Join.

7th rnd: In next V-st sp make sl st, ch 6, dc, ch 3 and dc; * ch 5, sl st in tip of next cluster, 7 sc in next loop, sl st between next 2 clusters, 7 sc in next loop; in tip of next cluster make sc, ch 3 and sc; 7 sc in next loop, sl st between next 2 clusters, 7 sc in next loop, sl st in tip of next cluster; ch 5, in V-st sp make (dc, ch 3) twice and dc. Repeat from * around, ending with ch 5. Join.

8th rnd: Sl st in sp, ch 8, * dc in next sp, ch 7, 2 dc in tip of next cluster on 6th rnd, ch 12, sc in next ch-3 loop, ch 12, skip sc's over next 2 loops, 2 dc in tip of next cluster on 6th rnd, ch 7, dc in next ch-3 sp, ch 5. Repeat from * around, ending with ch 7. Join to 3rd ch of ch-8.

9th rnd: In next sp make sl st, ch 11 and (tr, ch 7) twice; * skip next sp, sc in next dc, in next loop make sc, ch 3 and (3 sc, ch 3) 5 times; dc in next sc; ch 3, in tip of last dc made, make (dc, ch 3, sl st and ch 3) twice, dc, ch 3 and sl st (cross made); ch 3, in next loop make (3 sc, ch 3) 5 times and sc; skip next dc, sc in next dc, ch 7, skip next sp, in next sp make (tr, ch 7) 3 times. Repeat from * around, ending with ch 3, tr in 4th ch of ch-11 to form last sp.

10th rnd: Sc in sp, * ch 13, sc in next sp, ch 15, (sc in next sp, ch 13) twice; skip next 2 ch-3 loops, sc in next ch-3 loop, ch 11, sc in tip of cross, ch 11, skip next 2 ch-3 loops, sc in next ch-3 loop, ch 13, skip next 2 ch-3 loops, sc in next sp. Repeat from * around, ending with ch 7, tr tr in first sc.

11th rnd: Sc in loop, ch 11, sc in next loop, * ch 7, in corner loop make sc, h dc, 3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc, h dc and sc; (ch 7, sc in next loop, ch 11, sc in next loop) 3 times. Repeat from * around, ending with ch 7. Join to first sc. Break off and fasten.

SECOND MOTIF . . . Work as for First Motif until the 10th rnd has been completed.

11th rnd: Sc in loop, ch 11; sc in next loop, ch 7, in corner loop make sc, h dc and 3 dc; eh 1, sl st in any corner loop on First Motif; ch 1, in same corner loop on Second Motif make 3 dc, h dc and sc; (ch 7, sc in next loop on Second Motif, ch 5, sl st in next ch-11 loop on First Motif, ch 5, sc in next loop on Second Motif) 3 times; ch 7, in next corner loop on Second Motif make sc, h dc and 3 dc; ch 1, sl st in next corner loop on First Motif; ch 1, in same corner loop on Second Motif make 3 dc, h dc and sc; ch 7 and complete rnd as for First Motif (no more joinings).

Make 11 x 11 motifs for Small Cloth or 11 x 15 motifs for Large Cloth, joining motifs as Second Motif was joined to First Motif (where corners meet, join corners to previous joinings).

BORDER ... 1st rnd: Attach thread in sc following any ch-3 corner loop, * (ch 11, skip next loop, in next loop make sc, ch 11 and sc) 3 times; ch 11, skip next loop, sc in next sc, ch 11, sc in joining between motifs, ch 11, sc in next sc. Repeat from * around, making sc, ch 11 and sc in each of the 4 corner ch-3 loops and ending with ch 5, tr tr in first sc to form last loop.

2nd and 3rd rnds: Sc in loop, * ch 11, sc in next loop. Repeat from * around, making sc, ch 11 and sc in each of the 4 corner loops. Join as for previous rnd.

4th rnd: Sc in loop, * ch 3, in last sc made, make dc, ch 3 and sl st; ch 11, sc in next loop. Repeat from * around, making sc, ch 11 and sc in each of the 4 corner loops. Join as before.

Next rnd; Repeat 2nd rnd. Break off and fasten.
