MATERIALS:

CLARK'S O.N.T. BIG BALL MERCERIZED CROCHET

Size 30: 11 balls of White or Ecru and 13 balls of any color.

Steel crochet hook No. 10 or 11.

GAUGE: Each motif measures inches in diameter after blocking. For a tablecloth about 60 x 813 inches make 26 x 35 motifs.

FIRST MOTIF . With White ch 6, join with sl st.

1st rnd: Ch 1, 12 sc in ring. Do not join rnds.

2nd rnd: * Sc in next st, 2 sc in next sl (1 sc increased). Repeat from * around (18 sts).

3rd rnd: * Sc in next 2 sts, 2 sc in next st. Repeat from * around (24 sc).

4th to 7th rnds incl: Sc in each st around, increasing 6 sc in each rnd (48 sc in 7th rnd). Fasten off.

8th rnd: Attach color, ch 4 (to count as tr), holding back the last loop of each tr on hook make 2 tr in same place as thread was attached, thread over and draw through all loops oin hook (a 2-tr cluster made), * ch 5, skip next 2 sts, holding back the last loop of each tr on hook make 3 tr in next st, thread over and draw through all loops on hook (3-tr cluster made). Repeat from * around (16 clusters), ending with ch 2, dc in tip of 1st cluster.

9th rnd: * Ch 6, sc in next loop. Repeat from * around, ending with ch 3, tr in top of dc of last rnd.

10th rnd: * Ch 8, sc in next loop. Repeat from * around. Join last ch-8 to base of 1st ch-8. Fasten off.

SECOND MOTIF . . . Work 1st 9 rnds as for 1st motif.

10th rnd: Ch 4, sl st in any ch 8 loop on 1st motif, ch 4, sc in next loop on 2nd motif, ch 4, sl st in next loop on 1st motif, ch 4, sc in next loop on 2nd motif. Complete this rnd as for 1st motif (no more joinings)

Make necessary number of motifs and join 2 loops of each motif to 2 loops of adjacent motifs, leaving 2 loops free on each motif between joinings.

FILL-IN-MOTIF

1st rnd: Attach color to a free loop following a joining, ch 4 (to count as tr) make a 2-tr cluster in same loop, 3-tr cluster in next loop on same motif, * ch 3, 3 tr cluster in next loop on next motif, 3 tr cluster in next loop on same motif. Repeat from * around, joining last ch 4 to top of 1st cluster.

2nd rnd: Ch 1, work 4 sc over each ch-4 around. Fasten off. Work Fill-in-motifs in this manner in all sps between joinings.
