Gauge: 7 sc = 1 inch

PLACE MAT

Starting at centre, ch 4; join with sl st to form ring.

Round 1: 6 s c in ring.

Round 2: 2 s c in each s c- 12 sc.

Round 3: * 1 s c in next s c, 2 s c in next s c, repeat from * to end of round - 18 s c.

Round 4: * Ch 5, 1 sc in next s c, repeat from * to end of round, ch 2, 1 sl st in centre of first ch 5 loop of round-18 loops.

Rounds 5 through 10: * Ch 5, 1 s c in centre of next loop, repeat from * to end of round, ending with 1 s c in first loop of round.

Rounds 11, 12 and 13: * Ch 6, s c in centre of next loop, repeat from *, ending with s c in first loop of round.

Round 14: * Ch 7, 1 s c in centre of next loop, repeat from *, ending with 1 s c in first loop of round.

Round 15: * Ch 5, 1 s c in next loop, ch 5, 1 s c in same loop as last s c, repeat from * to end of round.

Rounds 16 through 21: * Ch 5, 1 s c in center st next loop, repeat from * to end of round; do not join.

Rounds 22 and 23: * Ch 7, 1 s c in centre of next loop, repeat from * to end of round.

Round 24: Repeat Round 15.

Rounds 25, 26 and 27: Repeat Round 22. Fasten off.

FLOWER MOTIFS: Make 28. Ch 3, join with sl st to form ring.

Round 1: Ch 5, * 1 d c in ring, ch 2, repeat from * 5 times more, join with sl st in 3rd ch st of first ch 5.

Round 2: * 1 s c, 6 d c and 1 s c all in next ch 2 space, repeat from * 6 times more. Fasten off.

Sew 26 flower motifs into a ring and sew to outer edge of place mat. Sew remaining 2 motifs tog and sew to mat to form napkin holder, as shown in photograph.

COASTER

BOTTOM PIECE: Ch 3, join with sl st to form ring.

Round 1: 6 s c in ring.

Round 2: 2 s c in each sc - 6 sc increased.

Round 3: * 1 s c in next s c, 2 s c in next s c, repeat from * to end of round - 6 s c increased.

Round 4: * 1 s c in each of next 2 s c, 2 s c in next s c, Repeat from * to end of round - 6 s c increased. Continue in this manner to inc 6 s c in EVERY ROUND, having l sc more between increases in each round, until there are - 42 sc. On next round * ch 4, skip 2 s c, 1 s c in next s c, repeat from * to end of round. On next round * ch 4, 1 sc in centre of next loop, repeat from * to end of round, ending with 1 s c in first loop. Fasten off.

Make 4 flower motifs in same manner as for mat. Sew motifs into a ring and sew to bottom piece. Then work as follows:

Round 1: Join yarn at upper edge in centre of any flower motif, * ch 4, 1 s c in centre of next petal, repeat from *, ending with 1 s c in same st in which yarn was joined.

Round 2: Ch 4, 1 s c in centre of next loop, repeat from * to end of round. Round 3: * 1 s c in next s c, 2 s c in next loop, repeat from * to end of round.

Round 4: * Skip 1 s c, 1 s c in each of next 6 s c, repeat from * to end of round. Fasten off.
