Ch 12, sl st in 1st ch to form ring.

1st rnd: ch 1, 24 sc in ring, sl st in 1st sc.

2nd rnd: ch 10 (to count as 1 do and ch-7), * sk 2 sc, dc in next sc, ch 7, repeat from * around, joining last ch-7 to 3rd st of ch 10 (8 sps).

3rd rnd: sl st in next 3 sts, ch 3 (to count as 1 dc), 1 pc st in next st, 1 dc in next st, ch 5, * sk 5 sts, 1 dc in next, 1 pc st in next, 1 dc in next, ch 5 repeat from * around, sl st to top of lst ch-3.

4th rnd: ch 3, 1 pc st in sl st just made, 1 dc in next pc st, 1 pc st in next dc (use back thread of sts only when making pc st), 1 dc in same dc (taking both threads), ch 5, * sk ch-5, 1 dc in next dc, 1 pc st in same st, 1 dc in next pc st, 1 pc st in next dc, 1 dc in same st, ch 5, repeat from * around, sl st to top of 1st ch-3.

5th, 6th and 7th rnds: ch 3, 1 pc st in sl st just made, * alternate 1 dc and 1 pc st over following sts to within 1 st from next ch-5, in this st make 1 pc st and 1 dc, ch 5, sk ch-5, 1 dc and 1 pc st in next dc, repeat from * around, joining last ch-5 as before.

5th row has, 3 pc; 6th row, 4 pc; 7th row, 5 pc in each section.

8th rnd: ch 1, sk a pc st, sl st next dc, ch 3, * 1 pc st in same dc, ** dc in next pc st, 1 pc st next dc, repeat from ** twice, 1 dc next pc st, ch 5, dc in same st as last dc, turn, ch 5, dc back in 9th st from hook (center st of 1st ch-5), turn, ch 5, dc back in 9th ch from hook, ch 5, dc in same st as last dc, ch 2, sk first pc st of next section, sl st next dc, turn, ch 2, dc in center st of last ch-5 made (this completes one corner), turn, work in pattern 4 pc sts on next section, ch 2, sk next pc st, dc in next ch, ch 2, sk 3 ch, dc in next ch, ch 2,sk next pc st dc next dc, repeat from * 3 more times (4 corners). 9th rnd: ch 1, sk a pc st, sl st in next dc, ch 3, * work in pattern 3 pc sts, ch 3, sk a pc st and ch-2 space, dc in next dc, ch 2, make a space over next space, ch 2, sk 2 ch, 1 dc next ch, ch 5, 1 dc in same ch as the dc last made (corner space), 1 sp over each of next 2 sps, ch 3, sk ch-2 and next pc st, dc next dc. Work in pattern 3 pc sts, ch 3, sk next pc st and ch-2, dc next dc, ch 2, make a space, ch 3, sk ch-2 and next pc st, dc next dc, repeat from * around to correspond. Join last ch-3 to top of 1st ch-3.

10th rnd: ch 1, sk a pc st, sl st next dc, ch 3, * work in pattern 2 pc sts, ch 2, sk next pc st, 1 dc in first ch of ch-3 space, 4 more sps, ch 5, 1 dc in same st as the dc last made (corner space), make 4 sps, ch 2, sk next pc st, dc in next dc, work in pattern 2 pc sts, ch 2, dc in first ch of ch-3 space, 1 sp over each of next 3 sps, ch 2, sk pc st, dc next dc, repeat from * around. Join last ch-2 to top of 1st ch-3,

Join last ch-3 to top of 1st ch-3, with sl st.

12th rnd: 2 sl sts at top of pc st, sl st in first ch of ch-3 space, * ch 5, (to count as 1 dc and ch-2), sk 2 sts, 1 dc in next dc (1 sp), continue making sps all around.

13th rnd: Repeat 12th rnd from *, working corners as before. Join last ch-2 to 3rd st of ch-5 with sl st.

Join blocks squarely as illustrated with over and over sts. Each block is 7 inches square. For a double bed size 84 xl05 inches, 12 squares across and 15 down, 180 squares.

For a single bed size 70x105 inches, 10 squares across and 15 down, 150 squares.

Finish off spread with fringe if desired. Allow 3 balls extra.
