MATERIALS:

CLARK'S O.N.T. or J. & P. COATS BEST SIX CORD MERCERIZED CROCHET SIZE 20, WHITE OR ECRU

SMALL BALL:

CLARK'S O.N.T. - 70 balls,

J. & P. COATS - 50 balls.

BIG BALL:

CLARK'S O.N.T. or J. & P. COATS - 30 balls.

Milward's Steel Crochet Hook No. 8 or 9.

GAUGE: Each motif measures about 4 l/2 inches in diameter before blocking.

For a tablecloth about 60 x 80 inches, make 13 x 17 motifs.

FIRST MOTIF . . . Starting at center, ch 10. Join with sl st.

1st rnd: Ch 1, 16 sc in ting. Sl st in 1st sc made.

2nd rnd: Sc in same place as sl st, * ch 7, 2 dc in same place as last sc, skip 1 sc, sc in next sc. Repeat from * around, ending with 2 dc, skip 1 sc, sl st in 1st sc made.

3rd rnd: Sl st in next 4 ch, sc in loop, * ch 7, sc in next loop. Repeat from * around, ending with sl st in 1st sc made.

4th rnd: 9 sc in each ch-7 sp around. Sl st in 1 st sc made.

5th rnd: Sc in same place as sl st, sc in each sc around. Sl st in 1st sc made.

6th rnd: Sc in same place as sl st, * ch 5, 2 dc in same place as last sc, skip 3 sc, sc in next sc. Repeat from * around, ending with sl st in first sc made.

7th rnd: Sl st in next 2 ch, sc in loop, * ch 7, sc in next loop. Repeat from * around, ending with sl st in first sc made.

8th rnd: Sl st in next 3 ch, sc in loop, * ch 5, 3 dc in same loop, sc in next loop, ch 8, sc in next loop. Repeat from * around, ending with sl st in 1st sc made.

9th rnd: Sl st in next 3 ch, sc in loop, * ch 8, sc in next loop. Repeat from * around, ending with sl st in 1st sc made.

10th rnd: 8 sc in each loop around. Sl st in 1st sc made.

11th rnd: Sc in each sc around. Sl st in 1st sc made.

12th rnd: Sc in same place as sl st, * ch 5, 2 dc in same place as last sc, skip 3 sc, sc in next sc. Repeat from * around, ending with sl st in 1st sc made.

13th rnd: Sl st in 1st 3 ch, sc in loop, * ch 7, sc in next loop. Repeat from * around, ending with sl st in 1st sc made.

14th rnd: Sl st in next 3 ch, sc in loop, * ch 7, 3 dc in same loop, sc in next loop. Repeat from * around, ending with sl st in 1st sc made. Fasten off.

SECOND MOTIF .. . Work as for first motif to 13th rnd incl.

14th rnd: Sl st in next 3 ch, sc in loop, * ch 3, sc in corresponding loop of first motif; ch 3, 3 dc in same loop on motif in work as last sc was made, sc in next loop. Repeat from * 4 more times (5 loops joined). Now complete rnd as for first motif (no more joinings). Make necessary number of motifs, joining them as 2nd motif was joined to 1st having 4 free loops between joinings.

FILL-IN-MOTIF ... 1st rnd: Attach thread to a free loop immediately preceding joining, ch 7 (to count as tr and ch-3), * d tr in joining, (ch 3, tr in next free loop) 4 times, ch 3. Repeat from * around, ending with ch-3, sl st in 4th st of ch-7 first made.

2nd rnd: Sl st in next sp, ch 5 (to count as d tr), 2 d tr in same sp holding back on hook the last loop of each d tr, thread over and draw through all loops on hook (cluster made), 3 d tr in next sp, holding back on hook the last loop of each d tr, thread over and draw through all loops on hook (another cluster made), * ch 5, skip 3 sps, cluster in each of next 2 sps. Repeat from * around, ending with sl st in tip of 1st cluster made. Fasten off. Work fill-in-motifs in this manner in all sps between joinings.
