MATERIALS: J. & P. COATS' Six CORD MERCER-CROCHET, (BLUE LABEL) , Size 20: 3 Balls White or 5 Balls Ecru.

Milward's "Ship" Brand Steel Crochet Hook No. 8 or 9.

1 1/2 yds of ribbon 1 inch wide.

A drinking glass

BOTTOM OF BASKET . . . Starting at center, ch 12. Join with sl st.

1st rnd: Ch 4, 32 tr in ring. Join to 4th ch of ch-4.

2nd rnd: Ch 5, * tr in next tr, ch 1. Repeat from * around. Join to 4th ch of ch-5 (33 sps).

3rd and 4th rnds: Ch 6, * tr in next tr, ch 2. Repeat from * around. Join to 4th ch of ch-6.

5th rnd: Ch 7, * tr in next tr, ch 3. Repeat from * around. Join.

6th rnd: Sl st in next sp, ch 4, in same sp make 2 tr, ch 3 and 3 tr; * ch 9, skip 2 sps, in next sp make 3 tr, ch 3 and 3 tr. Repeat from * around. Join to 4th ch of ch-4.

7th rnd: Sl st in next 2 tr and in next sp, ch 4, in same sp make 2 tr, ch 3 and 3 tr; * ch 5, sc in center st of next ch, ch 5, in next ch-3 sp make 3 tr, ch 3 and 3 tr. Repeat from * around. Join.

8th rnd: Sl st in next 2 tr and in next sp, ch 4, 2 tr in same sp, ch 5, sc in last tr (a p made); 3 tr in same sp, * ch 7, sc in next sc, ch 7, in next ch-3 sp make 3 tr, p, and 3 tr, Repeat from * around. Join and fasten off.

SIDES . . . 1st rnd: Attach thread to tr on 4th rnd of bottom of basket, ch 7, skip 1 tr, * tr in next sp on same rnd, ch 3. Repeat from * around. Join last ch-3 with sl st to 4th ch of ch-7, (32 sps).

2nd to 6th rnds incl: Sl st in next ch, s c in same sp, ch 7, * tr in next sp, ch 3. Repeat from * around. Join.

7th to 13th rnds incl: Work as for last rnd making 1 more ch in each sp. Join.

14th rnd: Sl st in next sp, ch 4, in same sp make tr, ch 2 and 2 tr; * ch 2 skip 1 sp, in next sp make 2 tr, ch 2 and 2 tr (a shell made); Repeat from * around. Join.

15th rnd: Sl st in next tr and in next sp, ch 4, in same sp make tr, ch 2, and 2 tr; * ch 3, in next shell make 2 tr, ch 2 and 2 tr. Repeat from * around. Join.

16th and 17th rnds: Same as 15th rnd, except make ch-5 between shells on 16th rnd and ch-7 between shells on 17th rnd.

18th rnd: Sl st in next tr and in next sp, ch 4, in same sp make 2 tr, ch 3 and 3 tr; * ch 7, in next shell make 3 tr, ch 3 and 3 tr. Repeat from * around. Join.

19th rnd: Same as 7th rnd of bottom, making ch 4 instead of ch 5.

20th rnd: Sl st in next 2 tr and in next sp, ch 4, complete a shell as before in same sp, * ch 5, sc in next sc, ch 5, shell over next shell. Repeat from * around. Join.

21st rnd: Sl st in next 2 tr and in next sp, ch 4 and make a shell over this shell, * ch 11, shell over next shell. Repeat from * around. Join.

22nd rnd: Same as 7th rnd of Bottom, making ch 6 instead of ch 5.

23rd rnd: Same as 8th rnd of Bottom.

HANDLE . . . The two center shells on each side of basket are the shells to be worked over for handle. On each side of handle are 6 free shells.

1st row: Attach thread to p of shell, ch 4, and complete a shell in same p. Ch 13, shell in p of next shell, ch 1 turn.

2nd row: Sl st in 3 tr and in next sp, ch 4 and complete a shell over this shell, ch 5, skip 6 ch, sc in next ch, ch 5, shell over next shell. Ch 1, turn.

3rd row: Sl st in next 3 tr and in next sp, ch 4 and complete a shell as before, ch 6, sc in next sc, ch 6, shell over next shell, ch 1, turn.

4th row: Sl st in next 3 tr and in next sp. Ch 4, complete shell, ch 13, shell over next shell. Ch 1, turn. Repeat last 3 rows 6 more times, ending with 2nd row. Joining the center of each shell on last row to p's of specified shells on other side of basket. Fasten off.

Run ribbon through Handle and make a bow at each side of Basket.

Stiffen Basket

SUGAR STIFFENING . . . Boil about 1/8 cup of sugar with 1 cup of water, until a thin syrup is formed (about 5 minutes). Dip basket in the syrup when it is cool enough to handle, then remove and place glass in basket. Let dry.
