MATERIALS: J. & P. COATS' Six CORD MERCER-CROCHET, (BLUE LABEL) , Size 50: 2 Balls White or 3 Balls Ecru.

Milward's "Ship" Brand Steel Crochet Hook No. 12.

BASKET . . . Starting at bottom, ch 30 (15 ch sts to 1 inch).

1st rnd: 3 sc in 2nd ch from hook sc in each ch across; 5 sc in last ch. Then work along opposite side of foundation chain, making sc in each ch across, 2 sc in same place as 1st 3 sc. Join with sl st to 1st sc made.

2nd rnd: Ch 1, 2 sc in same place as sl st, sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc, sc in each sc across to the 5 sc at opposite end, (2 sc in next sc, sc in next sc twice; 2 sc in next sc (3 sc increased at this end); sc in each sc to the last 2 sts, then make 2 sc in next sc, sc in last sc (3 sc increased at this end). Join.

3rd to 12th rnds incl: Ch 1, then make sc in each sc around, making an increase over each increase of previous rnd, (6 sts increased on each rnd). Join.

13th rnd: Ch 4, * skip 1 sc, dc in next sc, ch 1. Repeat from * around. Join last ch-1 with sl st to 3rd ch of ch-4. (Be sure to have even number of spaces.)

14th rnd: Sl st in next sp, ch 4, * dc in next sp, ch 1. Repeat from * around. Join.

15th rnd: Sl st in next sp, ch 3, dc in same sp, holding back the last loop of dc on hook, * skip 1 sp, 2 dc in next sp, holding back the last loop of each dc on hook, thread over and draw through all loops on hook (a cluster made); ch 3, dc at top of cluster, 2 dc in same sp as last 2 dc of cluster, holding back the last loop of each dc on hook. Repeat from * around, completing last cluster in same space where 1st cluster was started; then ch 3 dc in top of cluster, sl st at top of 1st cluster made.

16th rnd: Ch 3, dc at top of next cluster, * ch 5, dc in same place as last dc, holding back the last loop of dc on hook, dc at top of next cluster, holding back the last loop on hook, thread over and draw through all loops on hook. Repeat from * around, ending with ch-5, sl st at top of 1st dc.

17th rnd: Ch 4, * in next sp make dc, ch 1 and dc; ch 1, dc in next dc, ch 1. Repeat from * around. Join to 3rd ch of ch-4.

18th rnd: Sl st in next sp, ch 4, * dc in next sp, ch 1. Repeat from * around. Join.

19th and 20th rnds: Repeat 15th and 16th rnds.

21st to 24th rnds incl: Sl st in next sp, ch 7, * dc in same sp and in following sp, holding back the last loop of each dc on hook, thread over and draw through all loops on hook; ch 4. Repeat from * around, ending with dc in same place as last dc, sl st in 3rd ch of ch-7.

25th rnd: Sl st in next sp, ch 3, in same sp make dc, ch 2 and 2 dc; in each sp around make 2 dc, ch 2 and 2 dc. Join to 3rd ch of ch-3.

26th rnd: Sl st in next dc and in next sp, ch 3, in same sp make 2 dc, ch 2 and 3 dc; in each ch-2 sp around make 3 dc, ch 2 and 3 dc. Join.

27th rnd: Sl st in next 2 dc and next sp, ch 3, 5 dc in same sp, 6 dc in each ch-2 sp around. Join.

28th rnd: Ch 4, (dc in next dc, ch 1) 4 times; dc in next dc, * ch 2, sc between 3rd and 4th dc of next shell, ch 2, dc in 1st dc of next shell, (ch 1, dc in next dc) 5 times. Repeat from * around. Join.

29th rnd; Sc in next sp, * (ch 3, sc in next sp) 4 times; ch 3, sc in sp directly after next sc, ch 3, sc in next sp. Repeat from * around. Join and fasten off.

BASE . . . Holding the Basket up-side down, attach thread to sc in center of a sp on 1st rnd of spaces, ch 4, * dc in free sc; in next sp, ch 1. Repeat from * around. Join to 3rd ch of ch-4.

2nd rnd: Sl st in next sp, ch 4, * dc in next sp, ch 1. Repeat from * around. Join.

3rd rnd: Sl st in next sp, ch 7, dc in same sp, holding back last loop of dc on hook, * skip 1 sp, dc in next sp, holding back last loop on hook, thread over and draw through all loops on hook; ch 4, dc in same sp as last dc, holding back last loop of dc on hook. Repeat from * around. Join.

4th rnd: Same as 21st rnd of Basket. Fasten off.

HANDLE . . . Make a chain about 10 inches long (15 ch sts to 1 inch).

1st rnd: Dc in 6th ch from hook, * ch 1, skip 1 ch, dc in next ch. Repeat from * across, in last ch make (ch 1 and dc) twice; ch 1, and work across opposite side of foundation chain in the same manner, ending with ch 1, dc, ch 1 and dc in 2nd st of turning ch. Ch 1, join to 5th st of turning ch.

2nd rnd: Ch 1, 2 sc in each sp around. Join and fasten off.

Sew one end of handle to center of basket at each side.

Stiffen Basket:

SUGAR STIFFENING . . . Boil about 1/8 cup of sugar with 1 cup of water, until a thin syrup is formed (about 5 minutes). Dip basket in the syrup when it is cool enough to handle, then remove and pull into shape. Let dry.
