LEAF SQUARE

Ch 8, join with a slip st into a ring.

Ch 135, work 1 d c in 9th st from hook (A on chart), 1 d c in each of the next 3 sts, * ch 2, skip 2 sts, work 1 d c in next st; repeat from * 17 times, 1 d c in each of the next 3 sts, ch 2, skip 2 sts, 1 d c in each of the next 4 sts, * ch 2, skip 2 sts, 1 d c in next st; repeat from last * 17 times, 1 d c in each of the next 3 sts, ch 2, skip the next 2 sts on chain, 1 d c in last st (there are 4 solid blocks and 39 spaces in row).

Ch 135 for width at lower edge, following the general directions for the fruit filet square, but beginning at point A on the chart, follow to end, fasten off thread.

Edging: working from same side as last row, make a loop on hook and work 4 s c in first space, 3 s c in each of the next 3 spaces, 1 s c in each of the next 4 d c, 2 s c in next space, 1 s c in each of the next 4 d c, 2 s c in next space, 3 s c in each of the next 28 spaces, 1 s c in each of the next 4 d c, 2 s c in next space, 1 s c in each of the next 4 d c, 2 s c in next space, 3 s c in each of the next 2 spaces, 7 s c in next space, working down side of square work 3 s c in each space and 3 s c to each solid block down side of square, work along remaining 2 sides of square in same way being careful to have the same number of stitches on each side of square, end with 3 s c in same space as the first 4 s c were worked in, join with a slip st in first s c of round and fasten off thread. Darn in all ends neatly. This completes one basket filet square, make 10 of these squares.

Arrange squares in places as shown in diagram and sew from wrong side with an over hand stitch taking up top thread only on each edge, being careful to have seams as elastic as the crocheted fabric.

BORDER - Working from right side of cloth, beginning in right hand corner of short side of cloth, make a loop on hook and work 1 d c in center st of a group of 7 s c in corner space of corner square, * ch 2, skip 3 sts, 1 d c in next st, skip 2 sts, ch 2 and 1 d c in next and every 3rd st thereafter 41 times, ch 2 and 1 d c in seam between squares, thus working 43 spaces over one square, continue in this way to work 43 spaces over each square to corner, ending with 1 d c in corner st, ch 5, 1 more d c in same st; repeat from * around, end with 1 d c in same place as first d c, ch 2, join with 1 d c in top of first d c.
