Coats Mercer-Crochet No. 30. 3 balls. This model is worked in shade (Robinette), but any other shade of Mercer-Crochet may be used.

Milwards steel crochet hook No. 10.

Tension: 3 1/2 sps and 3 1/2 rows = 1 in. (approx.)

Measurements: Centrepiece-19 in X 10 in. (approx.)

Small Mat-7 1/2 in. square (approx.).

Ch-chain.

Sp - space = 3 ch, miss 3 ch or tr, tr into next ch or tr.

Blk - block = 5 tr, plus 4 tr for each additional bik in group.

Cross == Miss 2 sts, 1 tr into next st, 1 ch, inserting hook from behind last tr work 1 tr into first of 2 sts missed.

3 tr cluster = Leaving the last loop of each on hook work 3 tr into next st, thread over and draw through all loops on hook.

Cluster bar = 4 ch, a 2 tr cluster into 4th ch from hook.

Diamond cluster = A 3 tr cluster, (4 ch, a 2 tr cluster into 4th ch from hook) twice, a 3 tr cluster into same place as first 3 tr cluster.

CENTREPIECE

Commence with 128 ch.

1st Row: 1 tr into 12th ch from hook (sp made), 3 ch, miss 3 ch, 1 tr into next ch (another sp made), miss 3 ch, leaving the last loop of each on hook work 3 tr into next ch, thread over and draw through all loops on hook (a 3 tr cluster made), (4 ch, a 2 tr cluster into 4th ch from hook) twice, a 3 tr cluster into same place as last 3 tr cluster (a diamond cluster made), miss 3 ch, 1 tr into next ch, * (3 ch, miss 3 ch, 1 tr into next ch) twice, miss 3 ch, a diamond cluster into next ch, miss 3 ch, 1 tr into next ch; repeat from * 5 times more, (3 ch, miss 3 ch, 1 tr into next ch) twice, 7 ch, turn.

2nd Row: Miss first tr and 3 ch, 1 tr into next tr (sp made over sp), 3 ch, 1 tr into next tr, 3 ch, 1 sc into centre ch of diamond, 3 ch, 1 tr into next tr, * 2 sps, 3 ch, 1 sc into centre ch of next diamond, 3 ch, 1 tr into next tr; repeat from * ending with 1 sp, 3 ch, miss 3 ch, 1 tr into next ch, 4 ch, turn.

3rd Row: Miss first tr, a diamond cluster into next tr, 1 tr into next tr, 3 ch, 1 tr into next sc, 3 ch, 1 tr into next tr (2 sps made over diamond cluster), 24 sps, a diamond cluster into next tr, 1 tr into 4th of 7 ch, 7 ch, turn.

Now follow diagram 'A' from 4th row to top, turn diagram and omitting last 2 rows follow diagram back to first row, 4 ch, turn.

EDGING

Miss first tr, a diamond cluster into next tr, * a 2 tr cluster into next sc, 4 ch, 1 ss into same sc, 4 ch, a 2 tr cluster into same sc, miss 1 tr, a diamond cluster into next tr; repeat from * 6 times more, 1 tr into 4th of 7 ch, 4 ch, a 2 tr cluster into 4th ch from hook, 1 tr into same ch as last single tr (corner), * a diamond cluster into top of next tr, miss 2 row, ends, a 2 tr cluster into top of next tr, 4 ch, 1 ss into same place as last 2 tr cluster, 4 ch, a 2 tr cluster into same place as last ss, miss 2 row, ends; repeat from last * 14 times more, a diamond cluster into top of next tr, 1 tr into base of same tr, 4 ch, a 2 tr cluster into 4th ch from hook, 1 tr into same place as last single tr, complete other 2 sides and corners to correspond, ending last corner with 4 ch, a 2 tr cluster into 4th ch from hook, 1 ss into 4th of 4 ch. Fasten, off.

SMALL MAT (make 2)

Commence with 96 ch.

1st Row: As 1st row of centerpiece having 3 repeats instead of 5.

Now continue to follow diagram 'B' from 2nd row to top, turn diagram and omitting last 2 rows follow diagram back to first row, 4 ch, turn.

Work edging in same manner as centrepiece.

Damp and pin out to measurements.
