FILET CROCHETED CHAIR SET

This filet crocheted chair set, made of Unbleached Mercerized Crochet and Knitting Cotton, may also be used as a buffet set or the large piece may be used as ends for scarfs. The pattern includes a filet chart for the chair back and arm rest, also instructions describing how the charts are to be followed.

BEFORE STARTING SET IT IS ADVISABLE TO MAKE A SAMPLE PIECE TO INSURE CORRECT GAUGE (THE NUMBER OF STITCHES AND ROWS TO THE INCH). UNLESS GAUGE IS PERFECT, THE SET WILL NOT BE THE SIZE GIVEN.

MATERIAL REQUIREMENTS; Unbleached Mercerized Crochet and Knitting Cotton in (500 yard) skeins and a No. 7 steel crochet hook.

2 skeins of cotton will make a chair set or 2 scarf ends.

GAUGE; 4 spaces = 1 inch; 4 rows = 1 inch.

CHAIR BACK (12 1/2 X 16 INCHES)-1ST ROW; Ch 195, 1 dc in the 4th st from hook, 1 dc in each of the remaining 191 sts of chain (193 dc in row including the turning chain which always counts as 1 dc).

2ND ROW; Ch 3, turn, skip the first dc, 1 dc in each of the next 3 dc, ch 3, skip 2 dc, 1 sc in next dc, ch 3, skip 2 dc, 1 dc in next dc (this forms a K stitch; see chart), 3 more K stitches, 1 dc in each of the next 3 dc (this 4 dc group forma a block; see chart), ch 2, skip 2 sts, 1 dc In next st (this forms a space; see chart), 43 more spaces, a block, 4 K stitches, 1 dc in each of the remaining 2 dc, 1 dc in the top stitch of turning chain.

3RD ROW; Ch 3, turn, skip the first dc, 1 dc in each of the next 3 dc, ch 5, skip next sc, 1 dc in next dc (this forms an oblong; see chart), 3 more oblongs, a block, (2 dc in next space, 1 dc in next dc) 4 times, ch 2, 1 dc in next dc, follow chart across row working a space for each small square, an oblong for each oblong and a block for each solid square on chart (4 dc worked side by side form a block, when 2 or more blocks follow consecutively work 3 dc for each and an extra dc at the end), end row with 1 dc in the top stitch of the turning chain.

4TH ROW; Ch 3, turn, skip the first dc, 1 dc in each of the next 3 dc, ch 3, 1 sc in the center st of next oblong, ch 3, 1 dc in next dc, 3 more K stitches, follow chart across row.

5TH ROW; Follow chart.

6TH ROW; Ch 3, turn, skip the first dc, 1 dc in each of the next 3 dc, ch 5, 1 dc in next dc, 2 dc in next oblong, 1 dc in the center st of same oblong, ch 2, 1 dc in next dc, ch 5, 1 dc in next dc, follow chart across row.

Follow chart to the end of the 12th row.

13TH ROW; Ch 3, turn, skip the first dc, 1 dc in each of the next 3 dc, an oblong, ch 2, 1 dc in the center st of next oblong, 2 dc over the remaining 2 sts of same oblong, 1 dc in next dc, 5 dc in next oblong, 1 dc in next dc, follow chart across. Now follow chart to the end of the 38th row.

39TH ROW; Turn, a sl st in each of the first 4 dc, ch 3, 2 dc in next oblong, 1 dc in center stitch of same oblong, ch 2, 1 dc in next dc, follow chart across row ending with a block, do not work over the remaining sts. Follow chart to the end of the 43rd row.

LEFT HAND SCALLOP-1ST ROW; Turn, a sl st in each of the first 7 sts of last row, ch 3, 2 dc in next space, 1 dc in next dc, 2 dc in next oblong, 1 dc in center st of same oblong, a space, 2 oblongs, a space, a group of 10 dc, do not work over the remaining sts.

2ND ROW; Turn, a sl st in each of the first 10 dc of last row, ch 3, 2 dc in next space, 1 dc in next dc, (5 dc in next oblong, 1 dc in next dc) twice, 2 dc in next space, 1 dc in next dc; break off.

CENTER SCALLOP-1ST ROW; Turn, skip the next 5 dc on last long row, join thread with a dc in next st (see A on chart), follow chart across to B; do not work over the remaining sts. Follow chart for the remaining 6 rows of center scallop; break off.

RIGHT HAND SCALLOP-1ST ROW; Skip the next 5 dc on last long row, join thread with a dc in next st (see C on chart), follow chart across. Follow chart for remaining row; break off. This completes the chair back.

BLOCKING; Stretch and pin each piece to the correct size and shape on a padded surface. Cover with a damp cloth and steam with a warm iron; remove when dry.

BUFFET SET Follow the directions for chair set.

SCARF ENDS Follow the directions for chair back.
