Buffet Scarf-18 x 42 inches.

MOTIF (5 inches square when stretched and blocked).

1st rnd.: Starting in center, ch 2, 8 sc in 2d ch from hook.

2nd rnd.: Working in back lps only, sl st in 1st sc, ch 1, sc in same st, (ch 5, sc in next sc) 7 times, ch 2, join with dc in 1st sc.

3rd rnd.: (Ch 4, sc in next lp) 8 times.

4th rnd.: * 3 sc in half of next ch-4 lp, ch 12, turn, sl st in 12th ch from hook to form a ring, ch 1, turn, (1 sc, 1 hdc and 7 dc) in half of ring, ch 4, sl st in last dc for a p, (7 dc, 1 hdc and 1 sc) in bal. of ring, sl st at base of ring, 3 sc in bal. of ch-4 sp. Repeat from * 7 times, join to 1st sc and fasten off.

5th rnd.: Attach to 3d dc to left of p on one ring, ch 6, * tr in 3d dc to right of p on next ring, ch 3, tr in next dc, ch 9, tr in 2d dc to left of p, ch 3, ** tr in next dc, ch 1 and repeat from * 6 times and from * to ** again; join to 5th st of 1st ch-6.

6th rnd.: Sl st in next ch-1 sp, ch 3, dc in next ch-3 sp, * ch 2, dc in 1st st of next ch-9 lp, (ch 2, sk 1 ch, dc in next ch) twice to center ch, ch 5, dc in same ch, (ch 2, sk 1 ch, dc in next ch) twice, ch 2, dc in next ch-3 sp, ** (dc between next 2 tr) twice. Repeat from * 6 times and from * to ** again. Join to top of 1st ch-3.

7th rnd.: Ch 1, sc in same st, sc in next dc, * (2 sc in next ch-2 sp, sc in next dc) 3 times, 2 sc in corner sp, 3 sc in 3d st of same sp, 2 sc in bal. of sp, (sc in next dc, 2 sc in next sp) 3 times, ** sc in 3 dc in angle. Repeat from * around, ending at **; sc in next dc, join to 1st sc.

Work following 5 rows in back lps only.

8th rnd.: * Sc in back lps of next 13 sc, 3 sc in next (center) sc at tip of point, sc in next 13 sc, sk 1 sc in angle. Repeat from * around. Join to 1st sc.

9th rnd.: Ch 1, sc in same sc, * sc in next 13 sc, 5 sc in next (center) sc, sc in next 13 sc, ** draw up a lp in next 2 sc (one on each side of angle), thread over and draw thru 3 lps on hook for a dec. Repeat from * around ending at **; sk next sc, join to 1st sc.

10th rnd.: (Sc in next 15 sc, 3 sc in next sc, sc in next 15 sc, sk 1 sc in angle) repeated around. Join to 1st sc.

11th rnd.: (Sc in next 15 sc, 5 sc in next sc, sc in next 15 sc, sk 2 sc in angle) repeated around, join to 1st sc.

13th rnd.: * Ch 3, sk 4 sc, dc in next sc, ch 3, sk 3 sc, tr in next sc, (ch 3, sk 3 sc on added corner, tr in next sc) 7 times, tr in next sc, (3 dtr, ch 5, 3 dtr) in back lp of next (center) sc, tr in both lps of next 2 sc, (ch 3, sk 3 sc, tr in next sc) 7 times, ch 3, sk 4 sc, dc in next sc, ch 3, sk 4 sc, sc in next (center) sc at tip of point. Repeat from * around; join.

14th rnd.: Ch 1, sc in same place, * (3 sc in next sp, sc in next st) 9 times, sc in next 4 sts, 2 sc in corner sp, 3 sc in 3d (center) st of sp, 2 sc in bal. of sp, sc in next 5 sts, (3 sc in next sp, sc in next st) 9 times Repeat, from * around; join and fasten off.

Make 24 Motifs. Working on right side, sew them tog, going thru back lps only of sc. (Sew 8 tog into a long strip) 3 times, then sew the strips tog being careful to exactly match all parts of pattern. For a small buffet, make only 2 strips wide and as many Motifs long as desired, allowing 1 3/4 inches all around for Edge.

EDGE: Attach to one corner to 3d sc to right of center 3 sc at tip, ch 1, sc in same sc, sc in next 2 sc, * ch 15 turn, sl st in 12th ch from hook to form a ring, ch 1, turn, (1 sc, 1 hdc 7 dc, a ch-4 p, 7 dc, 1 hdc and 1 sc in ring, sl st at base of ring, ch 2, sk 3 sc, sc in next 8 sc. Repeat from * 7 times. Repeating from * again, complete another ring, ch 3, sc in 2d sc on next Motif, sc in next 7 sc. Repeat from * across to next corner, ending at 1st sc to right of center 3 sc at tip. Repeat from * around. End with 5 sc, join to 1st sc.

2nd rnd.: Ch 9, * sc in 5th dc to right of p on next (corner) ring, sc in next 3 dc, ch 9, sk 1st dc to left of p, sc in next 4 dc, ch 4, sk 2 sc between rings, tr in next sc, ch 3, (sc in 5th dc to right of p on next ring, sc in next 3 dc, ch 9, sk 1st dc to left of p, sc in next 4 dc, ch 1) repeated across side. To work around corner ring, ch 3, tr in 6th sc between rings, ch 4 and repeat from * around. Join final ch-3 to 5th st of 1st ch-9.

3rd rnd.: Sl st to center of next ch-4 sp, ch 5, dc in 2d sc on next ring, ** ch 2, dc in 1st st of next ch-9 lp, (ch 2, sk 1 ch, dc in next ch) twice to center st of lp, ch 5, dc in same center st, (ch 2, sk 1 ch, dc in next ch) twice, ch 2, sk 2 sc, dc in next sc, ch 2, dc in next sp, dc in 1st sp on next pattern, ch 2, * dc in 1st st of next ch-9 lp, (ch 2, sk 1 ch, dc in next ch) twice to center st, ch 5, dc in same center st, (ch 2, sk 1 ch, dc in next ch) twice. Repeat from * across, ending with ch 2, dc in 2 sps before corner ring, ch 2, dc in 2d sc on corner ring. Repeat from ** around, ending with ch 2, dc in next sp, join to 3d st of 1st ch-5. Fasten off.

Stretch and pin Scarf right-side-down in true shape, pinning out each point on Edge. Steam thru a doubled wet cloth, then press dry thru a doubled dry cloth.
