NOTE: This afghan consists of hexagon motifs made in 3 colors. The motifs are then sewn together. This afghan can also be assembled, having the deep scallops on the short side instead of the long side as shown in photograph. For afghan with deep scallops on short side, make 138 motifs to measure 46 inches by 65 inches for completed afghan. For afghan with deep scallops on long side, make 128 motifs.
HEXAGON MOTIF:
Starting at center with color A, ch 5. Join with a slip-st to first ch to form ring.
Round 1: Work 18 sc in ring. Join with a slip-set to first sc. Draw color B through last loop on hook. Break off A.
Round 2: Ch 4, working in back loop of each sc and holding back on hook the last loop of each dc, work 2 dc in same sc as slip-st and 3 dc in next sc, YO, draw through all loops on hook, * ch 6, skip next sc, holding back on hook the last loop of each dc, work 3 dc in each of next 2 sc, YO, draw through all 7 loops (one cluster completed). Repeat from * around, ending with ch 6, join with a slip-st to top of first cluster; draw color C through last loop on hook and break off color B (6 clusters made).
Round 3: Sc in same st as last slip-st, * work 3 tr in back loop of skipped sc on round 1, leaving ch-6 at back of work, sc in top of next cluster. Repeat from * around, end with a slip-st in first sc.
Round 4: With color C, ch 3, in same sc work 2 dc, ch 1 and 3 dc, * dc in each of next 3 tr, in next sc work
3 dc, ch 1 and 3 dc. Repeat from * around. Join and break off.
FINISHING: Run in all ends using a darning needle.
Press each motif lightly with a steam iron or over a damp cloth without using the weight of the iron. Using color C, sew motifs together with an over-cast stitch, picking up back loop only of each stitch at outer edge. Arrange motifs 9 across one row, and 8 across next row (this will be with deep scallops at side edge or follow chart having deep scallops at short edges). Continue in this manner until all motifs are joined. Then with color C work a row of sc all around outer edge, join with a slip-st to first sc. Break off.
