Worked as Brickmaker at the Queens Gardens Brickworks and to York as 2 CONT Manager of brickworks. He was a very good cook, which was just as well as 2 CONT his wife was unable to cook. After marriage he moved to Northam where 2 CONT he managed another Brickworks but it was here that his alcoholism became 2 CONT severe (his wife had to collect the men's wages from the bank and deliver to 2 CONT the men on site as J.J. would have drunk it all if he had collected it.) Lost 2 CONT his job. Moved to Hicks St, Gosnells while working at Cardup and Byford 2 CONT Brickworks. Just after W.W.1 he took the family and went contract clearing at 2 CONT Winchester. Moved back to Gosnells and continued to work for some years at 2 CONT Byford. At some time during the late 1920's or early 1930's he left his 2 CONT family and moved to Brookton, working as an odd-job man. It was said by some 2 CONT members of his family that he lived with an Aborigonal woman and had several 2 CONT children by her. Such liasons were illegal in those days but he seems to have 2 CONT got away with it.
