Special Counsel Closes In On White House Leak

SEATTLE- Dewey Morrison, latest in a string of special prosecutors charged with finding the source of the white house leak, appears to be making good progress in Washington. Morrison brings over thirty years of plumbing experience to the task. "I've done residential and commercial; plumbing, heating, even a.c.," explains the 56 year old Olympia native, "If there's a leak somewhere, I imagine I'll find it."

Morrison began his search in Seattle and plans to work eastward towards the border with Idaho. Asked about the possible futility of one man searching house to house, for what might turn out to be just a small leak, Morrison was optimistic: "We know it's in Washington, and we know it's in a white house. I mean, I won't lie to you, it could take a little while. I've searched 1,600 homes in Seattle so far, and I'm finding that white is a common exterior color, but this job is time and materials. Hell, they're paying government rate on mileage. That's a frickin' first."

In marked contrast to other special prosecutor's reputations of being frosty and tight-lipped about the progress and methods of their investigations, Morrison is open, and spoke candidly about the probe, even expressing some mild puzzlement with the assignment: "I'm not supposed to do anything with frozen pipes or clogs, just leaks. So I think it's some kinda' efficiency program. What's weird is, I've found a couple leaks already, but they don't want me to fix 'em. They just want me to keep track in the leak log," (Morrison taps at a clipboard with one finger) "Beyond that, no one's really telling me squat." -bcp

TIMELINE:

How We Got To Dewey

*July 14, 2003: In an op. ed. column exploring the administration's bogus claim of Iraq's attempt to procure Uranium from Africa, New York Times columnist Robert Novak identifies the wife of former ambassador Joseph Wilson as a covert CIA "operative."

*Administration is accused of outing an intelligence agent, and jeopardizing national security, to punish Wilson for being critical of the United States' invasion of Iraq. Many on Capitol Hill begin to call for an investigation into the leak of information from the White House.

*U.S. Attorney General, John Ashcroft, agrees that there should be an investigation, insists the Department of Justice is capable of handling the probe.

*December 30, 2003: Deputy Attorney General, James Comey, holds a press conference to announce that the A.G. has recused himself from the investigation. Comey announces that he, filling in for Ashcroft, has selected Patrick Fitzgerald, the US Attorney in Chicago, as a "special counsel" to lead the probe.

*February 17, 2004: Fitzgerald asserts that leaks involve water, a natural resource, and requests the matter be thoroughly examined by the Agency of Natural Resources.

*February 19, 2004: Environmental Protection Agency grows concerned about what the ANR might be doing with water, files an injunction barring the ANR from proceeding with the probe. ANR concedes, and the case is handed off to Suburban Plumbing & Heating of Olympia, Washington.
