BIG HEAD OR WEIRD NECK SYNDROME

I've seen a few cases of this problem in my lifetime. Occasionally I'll mention it to the afflicted artist but they ignore me and go on this way (sometimes I won't mention it at all because I can tell that's how it's supposed to look like). Maybe they like it that way, but if YOU DON'T then you've come to the right place to fix it.

HOW BIG SHOULD THEY BE?

In drawing realism, the actual head is roughly as thick as the neck because the neck will come down from the ears. Why? So your neck doesn't snap from supporting your heavy skull! But in most cartoons, like in anime, the proportions are much different. The proportions can also vary among styles, but in general the neck will be thinner than the head.

The lines for the neck come down from the edges of the space between the eyes. (See example.)
The head should fit into the waist (unless in cases of extreme female curve exaggeration or obese and wide males). As you can see in the example provided left, the head (excluding the hair) can pretty much fit inside of the waist. It doesn't have to be exact but it does have to be close to look right.
