Satellite Image Analysis on Land Use in the Arlington,VA -Washington D.C. Area

ArcVoyager Software        MultiSpec Software
by Sister Marie Dianne, Bishop O'Connell High School

Subject/ Grade Level: Grade 9 Earth and Space Integrated Science
Purpose: To use remote sensing, geographic information systems (GIS),  in-situ measurements, and modeling to investigate Human Impact on Near surface Atmosphere

State/ National Education Standards and Benchmarks Addressed by this Lesson:

VA Standards Of Learning : ES.12 :"Energy in the earth system" National Science Education Standards: 9-12: "Energy in the earth system"  Benchmarks : Grades 9 through 12:" A system in equilibrium"
Abstract: Students will be introduced to Remote Sensing Imaging of Thermal Data in order to investigate whether growing amounts of Impervious Surfaces in the Baltimore-Washington D.C. area are causing an increase in local atmospheric temperatures.

    C. Download Satellite Image File Sets
(from Landsat 7 (for 2000) and AVHRR (for past data files)
  • Create a new folder on your desktop
  • Unzip each file group using WinZip (free software) [N.B. Be sure that the file ending says .lan for at least one file set.]
  • Follow directions on the MultiSpec Practice Exercises from GLOBE.[P.S. You must have the free Adobe Acrobat Reader to read this file.]
  • Answer all of the questions in the document from step 3.
  • Repeat Steps #1-4 for a second file set of another year (to compare the land use growth.
  • III.Student Involvement:Procedure

to highlight population growth and land use. Source: Towsen Univ.
    A. Introduction to Remote Sensing Time: Allow about 1 week for concepts (as briefly described in "Background Heat Island and Remote Sensing Concepts"
    B. Image Processing Software Time: Allow at least 1-2 demo days for teacher to show students the tools and what this software does, and 2-3 additional student computer lab periods. [ Total:4-5 days ]
    • Follow directions on the MultiSpec Practice Exercises from GLOBE.[P.S. You must have the free Adobe Acrobat Reader to read this file.]
    • Answer all of the questions in the document from step 3.
    • Repeat Steps #1-4 for a second file set of another year (to compare the land use growth
    C. Time for Summary and Analysis of what students found:2-3 class days.
Evaluation: Informally throughout the learning process; discussion performance, cooperative attitude and quiet helpfulness, short written concept test, and final group presentation evaluation.
