The Luminous Mysteries

The First Luminous Mystery

The Baptism of the Lord
(Thursday)

Apostolic Letter: Rosarium Virginis Mariae

Chapter 2: 21

"The Baptism in the Jordan is first of all a mystery of light. Here, as Christ descends into the waters, the innocent one who became "sin" for our sake, the heavens open wide and the voice of the Father declares him the beloved Son, while the Spirit descends on him to invest him with the mission which he is to carry out."

Luke: 3: 21-22

Now it came to pass when all the people had been baptized, Jesus also having been baptized and being in prayer, that heaven was opened, and the Holy Spirit descended upon him in bodily form as a dove, and a voice came from heaven: "Thou art my beloved Son, in thee I am well pleased."

The Second Luminous Mystery

The Wedding Feast at Cana
(Thursday)

Apostolic Letter: Rosarium Virginis Mariae

Chapter 2: 21

"Another mystery of light is the first of the signs, given at Cana, when Christ changes water into wine and opens the hearts of the disciples to faith, thanks to the intervention of Mary, the first among believers."

John 2: 1-12

And on the third day a marriage took place at Cana of Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there. Now Jesus too was invited to the marriage, and also his diciples. And the wine having run short, the mother of Jesus said to him: "They have no wine." And Jesus said to her: "What wouldst thou have me do, woman? My hour has not yet come." His mother said to the attendants: "Do whatever he tells you."

Now six stone water-jars were placed there, after Jewish manner of purification, each holding two or three measures. Jesus said to them: "Fill the jars with water." And they filled them to the brim. And Jesus said to them: "Draw out now, and take to the chief steward." And they took it to him.

Now when the chief steward had tasted the water after it had become wine, not knowing whence it was (though the attendants who had drawn the water knew), the chief steward called the bridegroom, and said to him: "Every man at first sets forth the good wine, and when they have drunk freely, then that which is poorer. But thou hast kept the good wine until now."

This first of his signs Jesus worked at Cana of Galilee; and he manifested his glory, and his disciples believed in him. After this he went down to Capharnaum, he and his mother, and his brethren, and his disciples. And they stayed there but a few days.

The Third Luminous Mystery

The Proclamation of the Kingdom of God
(Thursday)

Apostolic Letter: Rosarium Virginis Mariae

Chapter 2: 21

"Another mystery of light is the preaching by which Jesus proclaims the coming of the Kingdom of God, calls to conversion and forgives the sins of all who draw near to him in humble trust: the inauguration of that ministry of mercy which he continues to exercise until the end of the world, particularly through the Sacrament of Reconciliation which he has entrusted to his Church."

Mark 1: 14-15

And after John had been delivered up, Jesus came into Galilee, preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God, and saying: "The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand. Repent and believe in the gospel."

The Fourth Luminous Mystery

The Transfiguration of the Lord
(Thursday)

Apostolic Letter: Rosarium Virginis Mariae

Chapter 2: 21

"The mystery of light par excellence is the Transfiguration, traditionally believed to have taken place on Mount Tabor. The glory of the Godhead shines forth from the face of Christ as the Father commands the astonished Apostles to "listen to him" and to prepare to experience with him the agony of the Passion, so as to come with him to the joy of the Resurrection and a life transfigured by the Holy Spirit."

Matthew 17: 1-8

Now after six days Jesus took Peter, James and his brother John, and led them up a high mountain by themselves, and was transfigured before them. And his face shone as the sun, and his garments became white as snow. And behold, there appeared to them Moses and Elias talking together with him. Then Peter addressed Jesus, saying: "Lord, it is good for us to be here. If thou wilt, let us set up three tents here, one for thee, one for Moses, and one for Elias." As he was still speaking, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them, and behold, a voice out of the cloud said: "This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased; hear him." And on hearing it the disciples fell on their faces and were exceedingly afraid. And Jesus came near and touched them, and said to them: "Arise, and do not be afraid." But lifting up their eyes, they saw no one but Jesus only.

The Fifth Luminous Mystery

The Institution of the Holy Eucharist
(Thursday)

Apostolic Letter: Rosarium Virginis Mariae

Chapter 2: 21

"A final mystery of light is the institution of the Eucharist, in which Christ offers his body and blood as food under the signs of bread and wine, and testifies "to the end" his love for humanity, for whose salvation he will offer himself in sacrifice."

Mark 14: 22-25

And while they were eating, Jesus took bread, and blessing it, he broke and gave it to them, and said: "Take; this is my body." And taking a cup and giving thanks, he gave it to them, and they all drank of it; and he said to them: "This is my blood of the new covenant, which is being shed for many. Amen I say to you, that I will drink no more of the fruit of the vine, until that day when I shall drink it new in the kingdom of God."
