SIMPLIFIED GUIDE TO USE NELSON’S INTERNET WEB PAGE

OBJECTIVE

This step-by-step instruction is designed as a guide for anyone wanting to use Richard Nelson’s web page at www.angelfire.com/planet/richnelson. This web site contains most of the handouts used in his workshops.

Notice that the instructions below include keyboard shortcuts for doing a Select All, a Copy and a Paste. Here is list of these keyboard shortcuts:
For Select All -  hold down the Ctrl key and peck the  A key
For Copy -  hold down the Ctrl key and peck the  C key
For Paste - hold, down the Ctrl key and peck the V key

You can jump directly to the web page by holding down the Ctrl key and click on the above address. Or you can read on for more detailed instructions.

THE USUAL WAYS TO JUMP

START THE INTERNET BROWSER SOFTWARE CALLED INTERNET EXPLORER.

The Internet Explorer Icon on the desktop looks like a lower case e and it usually says “Internet Explorer” under the icon. Starting Internet Explorer from the desktop is a two-step operation as covered below:

1. On the Windows Desktop, using your mouse, point at the Internet Explorer Icon and click once. That will highlight the icon.(This icon looks like a lower case e )

2. Now just peck the Enter key. That will start the Internet Explorer software. You should now see the Home Page of your a Web Page on your monitor screen. .

This will probably not be the web site you want but we will use it for awhile to practice with

GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS FOR JUMPING TO A WEB SITE (also called opening)

To jump to a web site, you must know its address. There is a Sample Interesting Web Sites Handout on Richard Nelson’s web page.

USING FILE ON THE MENU BAR

1.      Go up to the Menu bar and click on File and then click on Open – you will get a dialog box with space to type in a web address

2.      Type in the address of the web site that you want to jump to. In this case:
www.angelfire.com/planet/richnelson  

 3.  Peck the Enter key. – that will jump you to the web address you typed in

ALTERNATIVE WAY OF JUMPING USING THE ADDRESS FIELD

 

If there is no Menu bar present, this is another way you have to jump. This method requires more computer skills, but it is faster when you learn how to do it properly.

 

1. Click in the open space in the Address field.

That will highlight any address that is in that space.

2. Without doing anything, type in the web site address for the web site you want to jump to.

In this case: www.angelfire.com/planet/richnelson

3. Peck the Enter Key,

TO PRINT AN ENTIRE DOCUMENT DIRECTLY FROM THE WEB PAGE

To print the entire document- highlight the entire document by holding done the Ctrl key and pecking the A key, or as an alternative go up to the Menu bar and click on Edit, and then click again on Select All

Now go up to the Menu bar and click on File and then on Print.

PRINTING A SELECTED PART OF A DOCUMENT DIRECTLY FROM THE INTERNET

Highlight the part of the document that you want to print.

Now go up to the Menu bar and click on File and then click on Print

That will send the selected part of the document to the printer

TO COPY AND PASTE A DOCUMENT
There are two ways to copy a document. One way is to copy the entire document. The other way is to select just the part you want.

TO COPY THE ENTIRE DOCUMENT
After you find the document you want, hold down the Ctrl Key and peck the A key or go up to the Menu bar and click on Edit and click on Select All. In either case that will highlight the entire document. Now hold down the Ctrl key and click on the C key or go up to the Menu Bar and click on Copy. That will put a copy of the entire document on your clipboard. It may also put some advertising with it.

Now open your word processor.

Go up to the Menu bar and click on Edit and then on Paste or hold down the Ctrl key and Peck the V key.  That will put the entire document on your word processor ready to edit, save, and print. This is the easiest way but you will have to delete the advertising before you print it. A cleaner way is to select just what you want. READ ON!

COPY AND PASTE PART OF A DOCUMENT

Decide what part of the document you want to copy. Then highlight just that part of the document doing as follows:

Put your mouse I-beam where you want to start to highlight in the upper left corner of the document

  1. Then holding the left mouse button drag diagonally across the document to the lower right corner.
  2. Let up on the button when you have highlight all you want to copy.

Now hold down the Ctrl key and peck the C key or go up to the Menu bar and click on Edit and then on Copy. That will put a copy of the document on your clipboard.

Now open your word processor and go up to the Menu bar and click on Edit and then on Paste or hold down the Ctrl key and peck the V key. That will put the entire document on your word processor ready to edit, save, and print.

MANAGING PICTUES ON WEB SITES

TO COPY A PICTURE FROM A WEB SITE
Find the picture you want to copy and right click on the picture – that will give you a menu.
On the menu left click on Copy – that will put a copy of the picture in you clip board ready to be pasted onto a word document or graphics software.

TO PRINT A PICTURE FROM A WEB SITE
Find the picture you want to copy and right click on the picture – that will give you a menu.
On the menu left click on Print – that will send the picture to your printer.
