Go ~~~~~~~~~~~~ The eye wall winds gusted up to 173 mph in Punta Gorda, the city hit hardest by the storm. The eye of Charley passed Cape Coral about 7 miles to the west over Bookelia on northern Pine Island and took a sharp turn into Charlotte Harbor which Punta Gorda borders. Charley also did horendous damage to the barrier Islands Of Sanibel, Captiva, North Captiva and Pine Island The storm surge cut N. Captiva into two seperate islands and it will take months of filling in with sand to re-connect them IF EVER Cape Coral IS the largest city in South West Florida with over 110,000 inhabitants, is located across the Caloosahatchee River from Ft Myers Florida and between Ft Myers and The Gulf Of Mexico - 7 miles to the west south west Cape Coral, FLA. is famous for its over 400 miles of fresh and salt water canals ( more than Venice Italy ) ~ it is a fishermans Paradise Cape Coral received little or no mention on any of the news programs and I don't know why

Hurricane Charley and Hurricane Frances
Bill Tomsick - of Cape Coral FL
LIVED THROUGH THESE TWO HURRICANES AND NEVER WANT TO RELIVE THOSE DAYS
We have a lived in a unique house with a very unique and useful feature - a bomb shelter
The House was built in 1962 just after the Cuban Missile crisis
The owner at that time had enough foresight to add a room with three foot thick ceiling and 26 inch walls and a crank air pump to draw air into it
The ONLY problem is it is almost 2 feet below ground
We used it to store our belongings in
Jac is afraid it will flood while we are in it so we do NOT use it as a storm shelter !!!
I no longer live there

Hurricane Charlie
Fiday the 13th August 2004
Hurricane Charley came ashore as a category 4 hurricane with sustained winds of 145 mph and wind gusts up to 173mph
Punta Gorda FLA, which has many, many mobile home parks was hit dead on by the eye with winds of 145 mph and the powerful gusts
26 people died as a result
It is estimated that 15,000 homes were destroyed or rendered uninhabitable
Many there who still have a home are still without electricity on Sept 12th
God watch over the souls that were lost
Cape Coral, experienced 90 mph sustained and gusts over 100 mph winds and the devastiation on Cape Coral was also considerable with over 160 homes rendered uninhabitable or destroyed, thousand of downed trees, almost every lania ( a screened enclosure ) had its screens blown out and thousands were left in twisted piles of aluminum
Swimming pools were filled with screening and aluminum supports
Our "Twin Towers" were left in ruins
our area did not get electricity for 8 days
It was typical 95 degrees out for September - one day got up to 98 - and it was almost as hot in the house
Food Spoiled - no way to boil water for a few days - there was a lack of communication on where to go to get help on the radio and since there was absolutely NO gasoline to be found - we could not drive around to look for help on the chance the info given was wrong.
One neighbor who came back two days after the storm - pitched in - so we had a barbeque fire to cook on and boil water
But boiled water takes forever to cool off enough in 95 degree heat to be drinkable
A local church within walking distance served hot food and showed movies in an air conditioned room for about 7 hours during the heat of the day - until thay ran out food after 5 days
I did not see or hear The Mayor on TV or radio BEFORE or AFTER the storms
What A GREAT LEADER ???

Hurricane Frances
Sept 4th - 5th and 6th 2004
Cape Coral did NOT take a direct strike from Frances, a category 2 hurricane when it came ashore was rated at various times as a category 1 -2 - 3 and 4
The eye, with sustained winds at 122 mph came within 70 miles of Cape Coral and the winds were clocked at over 63 mph sustained and 73 mph gusts on the Cape knocking out our electric for 1 more day
As you can see in the pictures above Cape Coral FLA. has its own version of the Twin Towers - The 8 story Sunrise Condominiums on Cape Coral Pkwy East ( the tallest buildings on Cape Coral )
were left uninhabitable by Charley as the roofs blew off and then Frances blew the tarps off letting more water in
- you can see the re-fitted tarp blowing in the pic above
The residents of the Towers are still ON Sept 12th banned from re-entering the building because they fear structural integrity and they may be condemned
Hurricane Frances will go down as one of largest ( area wise ) of ALL time as it covered the whole peninsula of Florida at one time
Frances took over three full days to leave our area and went as far north as Canada wrecking havoc and flooding out areas in Alabama, Georgia - South Carolina, North Carolina, Tennesee, West Virginia, Kentucky, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Maryland, Virginia, Vermont, New Hampshire, Connecticut, Maine, Rhode Island, Massachusettes, virtually the whole eastern third of the U.S. and into Canada and spawning almost 100 tornadoes in its wake some of these tornadoes were killers
We were told help would be immediate but that is NOT true -- there are long delays as FEMA says victims must first see what their insurance will cover then file claims for help and then wait as FEMA sorts through the tens of thousands of claims for financial aid -
NOW as I add to this page on Sept 12th at 7:00 p.m. we are staring into "Eye" of Hurricane Ivan and the TV says the strom may pass to our west BUT that is what they said about Charley
I really fear this area might bear the brunt of the storm called "Ivan the Terrible"-
God Help & Protect Us ALL

How can we spend 70 billion dollars in IRAQ and leave victims of disaster without immediate help in this country ?
Shame On Us
