- The Mu Alpha Theta National High School and Junior College Mathematics Club was founded in 1957 by Dr. and Mrs. Richard V. Andree at the University of Oklahoma. In his words, Mu Alpha Theta is "an organization dedicated to promoting scholarship in mathematics and establishing math as an integral part of high school and junior college education." - Mu Alpha Theta is a National Mathematics Honor Society encompassing over 55,000 students in more than 1,300 schools. We are dedicated to inspiring keen interest in mathematics, developing strong scholarship in the subject, and promoting the enjoyment of mathematics in high school and two-year college students.
- National policy for the organization is determined by a Governing Council consisting of three national officers (president, president-elect or immediate past president, and secretary-treasurer), four Regional Governors, the director of the Vector Scholars Program, and representatives appointed by the Mathematical Association of America, the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics, and theAmerican Mathematical Association of Two-Year Colleges
- The National Office is at the mathematics department of the University of Oklahoma (though Mu Alpha Theta is not officially affiliated with the University). All of the day-to-day national-level operations of Mu Alpha Theta are performed by the Executive Director, Kay Weiss, and her assistants, Satheesh R Malur and Hamidah Ali. The Secretary/Treasurer, Dr. Paul Goodey, currently chairman of the University of Oklahoma mathematics department, oversees the finances of the National Office.
