Salmon Fishing

Salmon can be caught on fly, spinner, worm, and prawn, but not for the majority of dedicated salmon fishers, fly-fishing is the best and most effective way, and on many rivers the rule is fly only. Even on rivers such as the Wye, the famous Welsh Salmon River, many beats have now banned the use of spinner and bait.
In Oregon there are many very good salmon rivers, and bays. There is the Wilson River, Three Rivers, Nestucca, Rogue River, McKenzie River, Miami River, Clackamas River and way, way more.
Personally I like Fishing the Wilson River, and Miami River. In November, you can fish for the famous "Dog Salmon" or known as the Chum salmon. They are fierce fighters. You can use a wide variety of bright flies, like chartreuse, or pink. You will need an 8 weight rod, and 8 weight reel. I have an 8 weight Lamiglass Rod, and an 8 weight G. Loomis adventure 7 reel. It’s great for this type of salmon, and most salmon.
When I go to the Miami River, I fish about one hundred yards from the bridge. There are lots of ripples, and I just cast right before them, where right after the ripples is a pretty deep pool of water. There are usually a lot of people that go to this particular river, so you would need to try to go during the week.
On the Nestucca River, there are tons of great spots, but one of the best spots is below the guide shop, off of hwy 26. There is a large parking lot. Right below the parking lot is the river. Either the area right when you get down or, there is a bend right below the guide shop, that hold a lot of great fish. There is also a lot of steelhead. On the bend just go down the trail behind the fly shop to the bank that, is not very wide so be careful. Then walk up about 15 feet to where you can see a large stump sticking out of the water. Fish right below that. It is a large producer. Just cast like 8 feet and cast your rod at about 2 o clock. Flies that will work are; Green butt skunks, large egg patterns, all sizes are 2, ,
