Deschutes River:    Fair to Good    Flows are 4,050 cfs at Madras and 4,927 cfs at Moody.    Stoneflies are out from South Junction to  Maupin and fish are starting to key in on them.   It's just a matter of time before it breaks loose above  South Junction.    In the Warm Springs to Trout Creek run use a stonefly nymph followed by a smaller nymph .   With the weather warming up the dry fly action will pick up.  Try a black dbl bead stonefly nymph (Sz 4-6) trailed by a BH Pheasant tail (sz 16).    In the next 2-3 weeks look for surface action to break loose on both the dark and golden stones.  The big bugs will start hatching first in the lower river below Maupin because water temps will be warmer and as the river begins to warm above Maupin the hatch will get stronger up towards Warm Springs.  Best trout fishing will be in the eddies and slower water close to the bank.  Evening Midge hatches should provide good fishing.

Suggested Trout patterns: :   #4-6 Dark Stone Nymphs,  #8 Golden Stone Nymphs,  #18-20 BWO Comparadun, #16-18 Baetis Twilight Parachute, BWO Flutterwing Cripple #18-20, BWO Poxy-back Emerger #16-18, BH Pheasant Tails sz.16,  BH Prince Nymph #16, #18 Gold ribbed Hare's Ear, Zebra Midge #16-20, Black Beauty Midge #18-22, Serendipity #16-20, Sprout Midge, Griffiths Gnat #16-22.

North Santiam Know your river as in the last 12 days there has been 6 boats that have sank!!   3.81 ft. river level.   Best river levels for fly fishing are from 2.8' to 4.5'.  Good numbers of Spring Chinook in the lower river.  Lots of fish below Bennet Dam. Best float right now would be Greens Bridge to Jefferson or Mehema to Stayton. The only drawback right now is the cold water temps and this has caused fishing to be on the slow side.  Warmer weather forecasted this week will  help.

.
    Suggested Steelhead Patterns: #4 Blue/Black Killowatts, #4 Purple/Pink Killowatts, #2-4 Polar Shrimp, #4 Pink/White Starlight Leech, #4 Orange/White Starlight Leech, #1.5-3 Orange Heron, #1.5-3 Sol Duc Spey,  Pink   Articulated Leech #4,  #2-4 Skykomish Sunrise,  sz. 1/0 Pink/Orange  Skagit Minnow's, #1/0-2 General Practitioner..

Steelhead counts over Willamette Falls :  05-29-03 -  8,988 winter  steelhead and 5,752 summer steelhead and 41,086 Spring Chinook..  The fish passage data is incomplete as of 5-29-03.  There is one person that views the tapes and they are very far behind.  There are more fish than the numbers show as there are several days that haven't been totaled since 5-27-03.

Nestucca River:   Low and clear!!!  River level 4.34ft.  There are a few summer steelhead and a few Spring Chinook in the river right now.  Not much pressure.  If you need shuttle service call Ron at Nestucca Valley Sporting Goods in Hebo @ 503-392-4269.

Crooked RiverFair-Good  226 cfs (below Prineville).   Fishing has been good on the surface with Black midges and Baetis when the May flies are out. Bead head orange scuds, Prince nymphs, serindipities, pheasant tails, hare's ear and Peacock Carey buggers are all working below the surface.

Suggested Trout Flies:   Orange Scuds # 16-18, Griffiths Gnats #16-20, #18-20 BWO Comparadun, #16-18 Baetis Twilight Parachute, BWO Flutterwing Cripple #18-20, BWO Poxy-back Emerger #16-18, BH Pheasant Tails sz.16,  BH Prince Nymph #16, #16-18 Gold ribbed Hare's Ear, #14-18 Zug Bug, Zebra Midge #16-20, # 8-10 Peacock Carey Buggers, Black Beauty Midge #18-22, Brassies and Serendipities.

Metolius River:  Fair.  Best bet is from the hatchery downstream to bridge 99.  Some big Bull Trout have been caught.   Good hatches of BWO's and Midges should bring us some surface action on warmer days.  Green Drake hatch has been off and on.  When no hatches are present, nymphing with a 2 fly set-up (golden stone nymph followed by a BH Pheasant Tail nymph) can be very productive.

Suggested Trout Patterns:    #16 Tan or Olive Caddis, and all stages of Blue-Winged Olive's # 16-18,   Griffith's Gnat #16-22,  BH Hare's Ear Nymph #16-18, Red Serendipities #16-18, BH Prince nymphs #14-18,  #12-14 Bird of Prey, #14-18 Caddis Pupa, #16 Copper John (red or copper).   #6-8 Golden Stone Nymphs.   Fish for Bull Trout with heavily weighted white bunny flies up to six inches long.

Fall River:  Fair  BWO's and midge hatches mid-afternoon most days but fishing is best when it's overcast or cloudy.

Suggested Trout Patterns:    # 16-18 Parachute Baetis, #16-18 Sparkle Dun, BWO Cripple #18-20, #18 Palomino Midge, #16-22 Griffith's Gnat, Zebra Midges #18-22

Hosmer Lake:  The lake is fishing  well.   Try BH Peacock Carey Buggers, White Woolly Buggers,

Suttle Lake:  Anglers are catching some big Browns.  Fish have been concentrated along the shorelines.

Suggested Patterns:  #4 Peacock Carey Bugger,  #4-6  Muddler Minnows, #4-6 Black Nosed Dace.

Davis Lake: Slow-fair fishing.   Fish around weed beds for Bass.  Fish are kind of skinny and a bit stressed this year. Average size rainbows have been between 14-16 inches.  Bass are taking flies.  Callibaetis, woolly buggers and chironomids are the ticket for trout.

Mann Lake:  Slow-Fair Fishing.   It has been very windy as of late.  Its just been stormy the last few days.  The lake is low this year so the sooner you get over and fish the better your chances.

Suggested Patterns:  Peacock Carey Buggers sz. 6-10,   Pheasant tail nymphs sz. 12-18,  Wolly Buggers in black, olive, and brown, and Chironomids.
